Just got a new outboard and am somewhat confused as to why there is no shear pin. As the outboard did not come with any spare shear pins and the manual does not mention them I am guessing there must be some other way to protect the gearbox if the propeller strikes a log or rock.

A friend told me that some newer outboards are fitted with a clutch instead of a shear pin but neither of us are sure. Seems strange there is no info in the manual regarding this, after all it's something you would want to know before taking any outboard onto the water.

Anyone any ideas?

The engine is a Suzuki DF5 L-shaft.

Would it not be a hell of a paddle from Watten to Oldhall though Allan  :? I think the legs would be a bit tired by the time you travelled that far

Thanks for the replys.

I reckon it must have some sort of slipping clutch. No doubt i'll find out soon enough 8)
