If the hard drive is in a case then take it out and connect it to the PC direct. I have handled a lot of drives and I can't see how you can force the connections into one. Break off pins or bend them perhaps but that is about it.

so, can I just not plug in the external driver and a couple of clicks and the whole lot flies over to the external or is that just me looking for the easy way out.

this will happen

today folder ''my pics'' ........copy folder to external HDD........all ok

tomorrow add some pics to folder .............copy folder to external HDD......you now have 2 folders on the HDD

of course you can copy each 'individual' altered file over to the HDD.....................

what Karens does is copies over all the individual files you have altered/added and deletes any that you have deleted on your main PC

creating a mirror on your HDD

sorry if you know all this ---

if you use Karen set up the 'source' and 'destination' folders EXACTLY....like

C:/users/user/documents
and
X/documents ........where X is your external HDD

I use Synctoy.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=15155

I run it every so often and it transfers new files, deletes others and replaces updated files between my laptop, external hard drive and main PC. I also burn all the photos taken for a year to DVD at the beginning of the next year.

I set it to Contribute rather than Synchronize to the external Hard drive that way if I delete, replace or modify something on the laptop the original is still safe on the external drive. It is set for synchronize to the main PC as I work on videos and images on it as well as the Laptop so I like to keep them synced but only for specific folders, others are set for contribute.

I don't like to put all my eggs(or files) in one basket, so I use lots of memory sticks, not too big, so should one get lost or fail, then only a small amount of data is lost. I never put anything sensative on my computer, no bank details, nothing. Just a luddite at heart and don't trust tut 'tinternet.

Thanks everyone for the help

Apart from external drives unless that is the only way. How would you say back up something important like say a Website. My dedicated server providerhas a back up if anything goes wrong but I was thinking would it be advantageos if I had my own "just in case" Could you just save it to a disc?
If so how would you best do that.
I had a look at Amazon & there are plenty of external hard drives to choose from around £40-£64

I have three copies of my website Alan :)

One on the laptop, one on the main computer and the one online. That way I can work on the website whenever I feel like it and keep the laptop and main computer synced with SyncToy no matter which one I am working on.

I use this FTP program to upload and download from my site.

http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpcomm.htm

This is the free download one that I use.

Thanks Sandy, I built my website many years ago using Microsoft Front page 2000.
At the time was other than Dream Weaver the best way I thought.
To service it I simply use a Front Page password online & I can do anything I like with it. A simple save & it changes online almost instantaneous.
If in the remote chance that my computer gave up it ghost (It is a 6 year old DELL) I would have to re install Frontpage. Just a wee bit concerned as it is so old now. I just thought if I needed backed it up as a emergency.
thanks

You can still do that. The FTP program will let you download all the content on the server to your external drive and you can keep it backed up.
