Title: How do I test a jacket for waterproofness?
Post by: Tweed on March 26, 2010, 11:25:34 PM
If indeed waterproofness is a word.  I have a half-decent Berghaus jacket, but it's about 5 years old now and has had some decent use this winter.  I'm not sure how it will stand up to a good drenching in the new season, and don't want to wait untill I'm 5 miles from the car on an over-nighter before finding out.

Any tips?

jump in the shower with it on?

If you don't want to go in the shower yourself, give it a good soaking without you in it. If it wets out about ten minutes after a good drenching rather than shedding the water and drying out it's friar tucked.

Wash it with the reproofer stuff.

Or if it had a water repellent treatment on it then just bung it in a tumble drier for a short time.

When it's been washed with detergent M8 it's Friar tucked. No amount of reproofing will get that bad boys waterprooftness back.

is comfort fabric softener still better than the proper stuff?

Depends where you read about it. None of the waterproof fabric manufacturers recommend it and it is usually slated on the outdoor sites.

Wash it again in pure soap or Nikwax Techwash after cleaning out the powder drawer on the washing machine and running it through a cycle empty. Then wash it again in Nikwax Tx. Direct Wash In Wash In Waterproofer.

For some advice on using Nikwax.

I do my fleece with them and can be out in the rain most of the day and stay drier than my work mates who are wearing waterproofs :)

Sandy, I tried lux soap flakes, Nikwax the lot as advised by the guys at Tiso when my Sprayway got cream crackered years ago. Nothing worked, I basically just ended up with   a multi coloured Barbour Jacket without any waterprooftness,I think the only thing that would have helped it was Barbour dressing i.e. wax. I basically had a jacket which was goretex which ended up unproofed cotton. :x

fk, what about 'partial' waterprooftness?

Alan it had total unwaterprooftness

To test: zip it up, inside out, fill it with water, and look for leaks.

To fix: wash with Nikwax as Sandy says, then iron it: gently, on moderate heat, using strokes only from top to bottom. Re-orientates the "scales" of the fabric that softener "loosens".

Trust me. And you can do her blouses and skirts, while you've got the iron out. There'll be a BJ in it.

How exactly should I do the blouses and skirts CB? I want to get this right as I'm a perfectionist when it really matters. And it really matters

If it is Goretex it is still Goretex as that is a waterproof membrane attached to whatever material the jacket is made from. Nikwax doesn't cause the water to bead on the surface, unless it is fleece :), but it does stop the water from passing through the jacket. After working outside in all weathers for the past thirty years I could write a book on waterproofing clothes :) I have been out in three to four hours of heavy rain in a Nikwax waterproofed jacket and been drier than guys in full issue waterproof jackets. Ok!, they were cheap crap but that isn't the point. Washing it in Nikwax Techwash  every now and again and re-proofing when it needed it was all it took to keep me dry.

The secret to waterproofing in the machine is definitely getting rid of ALL traces of detergents and soap. The only time it worked for me was cleaning the tray then soaking it for a few hours in hot water, then running an empty hot cycle a couple of times. Still not as good as having to buy a nice new one!

Is it not "waterproofability"?  :?

You don't have to use it in a machine. Make up the solution in a large basin and wash/waterproof it like that, you know the old fashioned way, by hand :)

After using it on the jacket give your tent a treat ; soft brush to paint it over the flysheet and door and a soft cloth to wipe the excess off and allow to dry :) A warm sunny day in the back garden is all it takes. I have done my Argos Oneman and Blacks Good Companion Standard Cotton tent this way.

Sounds like some good advice - thanks all.  It'll need to be mind - I'll not be in the market for a new one now - what with having to fork out for the therapy to get the mental images of the whole NZ/watersports thing out of my head
