Title: Black Mel
Post by: scotfly on July 01, 2008, 07:54:40 PM
I recently took part in a swap on outdoorsbest forum, the criteria was simple, a wingless wet using only two materials, the thread counted as one of the materials. I submitted two patterns of which this is one of them, which I have named the ?Black Mel? for obvious reasons.
Take a look at all the entries here ??. http://www.danica.com/flytier/ibf8_2008/ibf8_2008.htm       Pay particular attention to Hans Weilenmanns pattern. He took the two material concept to a level beyond us mere mortals!

Instructions assume right-handed tyers.

HOOK - Niche 502 #14 (same as TMC200R)
THREAD/BODY/RIB - Black Ultra Wire X-sm
HACKLE - Melanistic Pheasant (Taken from the neck)

STEP 1
Attach the wire at the eye of the hook.

STEP 2
Prepare and tie in the hackle on top of the shank.

Trim the waste stem and continue wrapping the wire to form the body.

STEP 3
Trim the tag of wire to waste, then wrap the working wire back up the body in an open spiral to form the rib. The last turn of wire should be in front (to the right) of the hackle.

STEP 4
Wrap the hackle, 11/2 ? 2 turns at most and tie off.

STEP 5
Trim the waste and whipfinish, before applying a spot of Superglue to finish.
