Title: Micro Caddis
Post by: scotfly on February 13, 2008, 08:59:41 PM
This pattern is quick and easy to tie, robust and durable and amazingly effective? Can you ask for anymore!
Vary the colours to suit if you like, but I think you could tie it sky-blue pink and the fish would take it. It has an almost perfect profile in the water.

Instructions assume right-handed tyers.

HOOK ? TMC100 #20
THREAD ? Grey Gudebrod 10/0
BODY ? Hare Ear
WING ? Grey Goose

STEP 1
Attach the thread.

STEP 2
Dub it with a pinch of hare?s ear and wrap to form the body.

STEP 3
Prepare the wing by ????..

Giving a feather, here I?ve used grey Goose, a liberal coating of Floogloo, Featherweld, Flexament or similar and allow to dry.

Cut a strip from it approximately 11/2-2mm wide.

Fold it in half and cut the tip at an angle as shown.

Open it and you have a sedge wing.

STEP 4
Apply a spot of glue to the top of the body. It looks like I?ve used a huge amount here, but I haven?t.

STEP 5
Tie the wing in. Little pockets of air will form round the glue and underside of the wing, aiding flotation.

STEP 6
Trim the waste, whipfinish and varnish for the completed fly.

Now that is smart. Both simple and effective.

That looks the part, is their no need to further gink the wing?

I still "Dilly Wax" the whole fly. More a habbit/confidence thing I think.

What type of glue is that anyway? "Featherweld" sounds like something that costs an arm and a leg from a tackle shop and probably about 50p / gallon if you buy it in B&Q    :D

Featherweld (lureflash) and Floogloo (veniard) are waterproof flexible adhesives. I don't know what the non-flytying and almost certainly cheaper equivalent is.

Flexament (umpqua) is a similar product, only more expensive and great for sniffing  :goog

Got some glue that works a treat Bostik "Soft Plastics clear adhesive" welds the feather does not discolour  and it stays soft and flexible

Excellent.
