This is a nice film. I've never even seen a Winston Rod far less fished with one.

Never owned one but have had a cast or two with one that Andrew Moray has. They are very good but what I would expect from top notch USA manufacturers. Remember some years ago there was mention on another forum that sometimes the cork could be a bit better but that was a long time ago so do not read much into that.
Like most high end USA tackle Sage/Orvis etc here not cheap in UK. If you get one stateside you could save yourself a few quid if you can avoid customs duty but that is easy enough to do if you are clever enough.
Tight Lines
Several years ago after reading a number of rave reviews I was lent a Winston "Tom Morgan Favourite" . It was a very nice rod but I found it too specialist for my general loch fishing. Lovely smooth and gentle action accurately to place a dry fly close in to the bank but when I wanted a quick cast to a rise further out the rod ran out of power. Not the rods fault as it was not designed for that purpose.
Ironically, a few years ago I treated myself to an actual Tom Morgan which is a real work of art. It has the same issue as the Winston being an absolute joy for dry fly fishing closer in but not designed for reaching the horizon. While I always enjoy casting with the TM, it is not my favourite or go-to rod.
I have only one hand build which is on a Loomis blank. 7ft 6in 4wt 4pc made by the one man band Kudos Rod Co in Wales, now retired. Lovely wee rod and pretty crisp. Frightened of breaking it I hardly use it !!! Daft really because I also have a 20yr old Sage XP 8ft 5wt which is "kept for good" so it hardly gets out either!
I have another, a NZ Taniwha 10ft 3/4 wt which was a semi build and it is a beezer to use too, and it does get used.
Rods should be used Vaughan. :D
I use my cane rod from time to time. It's a lovely little thing as long as there is no headwind!
6 1/2 foot #3 weight made by Mr Zhus in China. It cost about £120 15 years ago, ordered direct, came with 2 top sections, and is a thing of exquisite beauty.
As I always say one cannot have too many fly rods - you have to use them now and then though! :D

I have an Edgar Sealey Old Gold 9ft 2piece which is good to use. Casts amazingly well. Had it for 55 years now and use it dry fly from the boat. Stops me lifting too quickly to a take because of the softening bendiness !!
Not the lightest rod but it works nicely. Line rating not marked but 5/6 is fine.

Thinking back I reckon it was my 16th or 18th birthday present so that makes it 58 or 56 years ago. Very attractive golden yellow narrow whipping band every inch and a half all along the rod. Rare to have a break off or lost hook up since just bends right through to the butt but casts a decent line with ease.
I have a mental picture of the Edgar Sealey ads in T&S when I was a kid. :D
Edgar Sealey made a rod called "The Glane" which was glass and although heavy by today's standards was a joy to fish. Come up on E bay from time to time next time I see a good model I will have a bid. On an aside I am looking for a Milbro Verre 12ft glass if anyone sees a good one one come up on Flea bay. Likewise a ABU Laplandia 541. Sorry to hi jack the thread.

I've owned a im 6 in a 5 weight for over 20 years that uses a loomis blank. It's a great casting rod with a nice action I've not found in other rods I've owned or used.
