Next step in the weight / bulk reduction drive is getting shot of the fishing vest when up in the hills. I am looking  some kind of bum / waist bag  for carrying the  likes of the fly boxes, tippet material, cutters etc, and was thinking about this one. Cheap and cheerful.

Any ideas or suggestions?

That will drive you bonkers!  Always in the way, very uncomfortable, and chafes like hell. I tried a couple of these belt type things. Awful!

I use an assault vest.

This might suit you:  http://www.amazon.co.uk/KLOBBA-FLY-WAISTCOAT-XP-KFWXP/dp/B0042L3H44/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331925017&sr=8-1

Have to say I hate anything carried in front of me when fishing. It restricts movement when you want to climb up banks, over big boulders, sometimes gets in the way of casting, sometimes grabs hold of your line. Just not for me. I also couldn't go a bum bag, would drive me mental.

Two options for me are backpack if I need to carry a lot or use something as a sling-type pack. I see Orvis have brought out sling packs but I'm not keen on them. I went with a chestpack-type bag, use a shoulder strap and wear as a sling, it has a horizontal strap too to go around your middle and stop it flapping. I then just carribeana (sp?) clip on anything else needed, usually a tiny dry bag and a lightweight jacket in its stuffsack. Have to admit the sling looks pretty gay but it does the job!

Other than that stuff goes in pockets. Fly box in the pocket, scissors in the pocket, same with tippet and floatant. All you need really and can cope with that in one shirt pocket and a trouser pocket.

Example of gay sling (with jacket, bag, camera, drybag) and gay tights... what a shite look! Will have to be changed for this season

I use this, in black.

I use it for everyday fishing or with the rucksack. It fits round my waist under the rucksack and carries all my fishing stuff and my waterproofs slung underneath held by the compression straps, either round the back for walking or at the right side when fishing and I need into it. For awayday fishing it has room for snacks and my water bottle gets trapped between the bag and the side compression straps. It has one big main compartment which takes a lot of stuff and a front zip pocket which is big enough for a flybox and a few other small bits and pieces.
Don't worry, be happy.

Carried it in full, then carry it out empty.

There is more inside. Filleting knife, two spare spools with lines, three spools of maxima, tin of Mucilin, bottle of liquid floatant, three film canisters with weighted flies, braided loops and pain killers, weigh balance, thermometer, snips and various other stuff that I can't remember :)

I have a small chest pack to keep my hill loch fishing tackle together, will always take some sort of rucksack when going to hill lochs and usually leave the chest pack inside the rucksack after tackling up.

I use the Klobba on the advice of a member few years back  & have found it use full.
Only small drawback was the quality with a few bits of stitching coming away early on.
A quick dab with needle & thread sorted that & no further complaints. For it' s price £19.99 it is certainly good value.
Now having said that for wandering the I prefer a small day sac. A 25litre Bergaus suits me just fine.
