Ive used this for the past two seasons,its round the back with nothing at the side to get in the way.don't know its there most of the time.

I prefer a small backpack and keep things I need to hand (flybox, floatant etc) in my pockets. For walking in and camping using a bigger pack I considered taking one of those lightweight packable daysacks but didnt need it as my main pack has a detachable daypack that works fine.
