On waders, years ago before breatheables we wore latex rubber & the standard boot was a studded one from a company call Ross. On the Leven there was a band of anglers myself included that traveled most Saturdays on the "Blue Train" from Queen St. The boots we used were "baseball boots" I suppose the nearest equivalent today would be Converse All Stars
They were ideal for that river which is a mixture of sand gravel & mud.

i have a pair of simms g4(?) boots which are studded sticky rubber and are eminently suitable for walking in. they're not cheap () and they're not the lightest, but they ARE excellent and superbly made. i've done 15k+ a day in these and they're 5 years old. the new G4 boot is the closest i could find to them. http://www.simmsfishing.com/site/g4_guide_boot.html

for canoeing and light wading i use a pair of teva river shoes (which ARE cheap) over my stocking foot waist waders. this might be a good combo for you, as they're light and compact enough to stow in a pack for the walk-in.

most times i'm so keen to get going and more concerned with being light and manoeuvrable;  i wear light fabric/leather hill boots and expect to get my feet wet.....

i'm looking at pack-rafts right now: http://www.packrafting-store.de/  :8)

i've bought a £40 special which i'm sure will work fine for the odd foray or two. it was that or a float tube/diy inner tube. like you, i've got too much of a investment in a canoe to justify another £500 on a pack-raft. interesting, though. i remember reading articles by roman dial about travellling the yukon a few years ago. pity his book's not cheap! (although i just found this link so $24 delivered worldwide isn't too bad....http://packrafting.blogspot.co.uk/)

may have to start a new thread on this one, as malcolm's original topic seems to have been hijacked.....
