that article suggests catch and release might be a more sensible option, with numbers low why are they in supermarkets??

Because the supermarkets can make money on them, among many others. Very few anglers fish for money, or for subsistence, most fish for sport and so don't mind returning the fish.  It is not really considered a commodity as such by most anglers.  To the fishing and food industry that's basically all it is.

Indeed, it is now forbidden to retain common skate in all EU waters, and it is on the prohibited list.

Peppo's chipper in Arbroath probably accounted for a few. They did a magnificent skate supper.

Beautiful creature that.  The fish that is!

Do they go back okay after capture? I know they tag a few - do they ever turn up again?

They go back fine there's been numerous tagging programs over the years Too many according to Ronnie hes refusing to do anymore as the tags were being handed out to just about anyone who showed a interest.Ronnie was catching skate with wrongly fitted tags and showing signs of mishandling it seemed there was so many tags there was no coordination  in the programs.

I got a daiwa catalogue delivered on monday ive to choose £150 worth of tackle from it and have decided to go for a top end spinning rod.As theres no way id normally spend £100+ on a rod.Im looking for a medium spinning rod for trout perch etc not a salmon rod .Ive narrowed it down to.
1) Wilderness XT spinning rod 9ft 10-40gm casting weight.
                            OR
2) Whisker 9ft 10-40gm casting weight.

The Shogun is nice too.

Anyone use any of these rods.?

I have a whisker 10ft 10-40gm 4 piece which I like, keep it in the car when salmon fishing incase I'm struggling to fly fish.

I have the two piece  model and its a pleasure  to use.
The wilderness looks a absolute  beauty though.

Wilderness is good too, I have the 11ft 2 piece, 20-60gram, use it on the Ness to work a devon like you would fish a fly. Hard to see past Diawa spinning rods, at least you get a decent handle, whats all this latest craze for small handles all about ?
