Title: Six nations
Post by: Suki1312 on February 02, 2014, 04:15:01 PM
Any rugby fans on the forum , I'm not a mad fan but always keep a keen eye on the six nations . Always start with great optimism for Scotland every year , but it's usually away by the end of the first game . Been a long time since that magical day at murrayfield .  :D

Ireland were slow to start but once they did it was all one way. Scotland never in it in the second half.

Scotland just seem to be lacking in that cutting edge to score, after the performances this weekend, Ireland and France look to be in front, can't see Wales winning in Dublin next week.

When did the guy in the middle of the front row stop being the hooker to become the thrower.

I wouldn't rule Wales out - they lost their first game last year and went on to win the Championship.
I am delighted we won today but won't get carried away - we beat Wales last year and then fell apart.
England lost yesterday but should have won and they will still be in the mix at the end .
France will be buoyed by yesterdays win and won't be as bad as last year.
Italy may cause an upset along the way but that's about it.
Scotland - unless they take some of the chance's they create will struggle but may surprise someone at Murrayfield

That's my 'EXPERT ' opinion . :worried

Scotland will always raise their game in the Calcutta Cup and this is not a very good England team at the moment, but they have to play with some skill and not just at three hundred miles an hour. It's all too lateral, rarely beating players on the gain line. Denton apart, they just seemed to go wide too soon and not move forwards.

That was the poorest lineouts I have seen from Scotland in years.  It was not that long ago that they were one of the best at the lineout.

Aye its a bad day for Scottish sport with the rugby result in Dublin and now Andy Murray defects to England. Still his next defeat will see him Scottish again!

So much London tosh, Scotland will get better with a decent coach, the one they have is pretty useless, these players deliver for their clubs pretty well(well the ones not at Edinburgh tend to). England ground them into a very poor pitch and that is due to be replaced, expect some fireworks in Italy in 2 weeks as that is a GOT TO WIN match.

I blame Westminster and in particular the Tories. And let's not forget weapons of mass destruction.

How anyone can get so uptight about things like rugby or football escapes me. Take up trout fishing. Shit, I just remembered that,   like rugby, New Zealand imported that from us and does it better too.

Ach New Zealands fish are all stockies from Leven Fred, they don't count(indeed a lot of their rugby players are stockies from the Pacific Islands too come to think of it. Not good old English names like Tuilagi or Vunipolo??)

TBH I'm surprised Scotland do as well as they do at rugby. It's a minority sport from Edinburgh and the borders. It's really not popular to any great extent in the rest of the country. Precious few Scots play it, fewer now than ever.  John Beattie was discussing this today on Radio Scotland. Participation wise it's in crisis.

Anyone who has been to New Zealand will tell you that every town,  township, cluster of houses seems to have a rugby pitch. It's massively popular and always on TV. That's why they are good at at. If it came to drinking competitions we Scots would excel. Mind you the Kiwis and Aussies are damned good at that too.

I do not know the current stats but quite recently is was the case that the Bath local league area had more registered players than all the Scottish clubs combined.

Scotland has some good individual sports people. Andy Murray and Chris Hoy for example. We just don't seem to do team sports very well even team sports that are massively popular  in our country, like football.

So long as they avoid swapping over the giant false eye lashes from the ladies team, and the strangely orange makeup.

Two games running that Johnson has dropped the best player in the side, dropping Denton? He is probably the only player from the last game that would get into any of the other nations side . Italy with Parisse at the back of the scrum will be thinking his birthday has come early.

Never thought I'd see a Scotland team that lacked aggression (usually too much and not enough composure) but this bunch aren't tackling hard and quick enough or relishing taking the hit in attack  - it's all just a bit wimpy.  Better technical performance though.  Lineout much better with Gray back in it but just not abrasive enough up front - bring on Strokosch!!

Oh and now we've just conceded a try in the final minute of the half. Awaiting the second half with trepidation....

Just as I was about to say how much better Scotland are playing in the second half, they go and concede another try, doh !
Turning out to be a good game though.

Edit - Gutsy comeback from the lads and a well deserved victory. Cracking play in the last minute to set up the drop goal.
Something for the fans to smile about at last.

We really shouldn't have put ourselves in that position with such a passive and weak first half.  The tackling was still rubbish but a much better abrasive forwards performance in the second 40. And Dunbar a new hero.  The wee man with no neck showed superb composure to land a - far from easy - last minute drop goal there to snatch victory and actually the hooker had a decent game too and hit his marks in the line-out (much better than Ford) and was good round the park (even with the boot).
But the fact that we're getting excited about an Italy win says a lot about where we are in the rugby world now.  :-(   I'm currently in Rabat in Morocco for the next few months and must go round and apologise to the new neighbours later for all the shouting and swearing!!

Still the same old handling and decision making mistakes in the last 22  . But second half was more like it , best ive seen for a couple of years . It might only be Italy but not many teams get an easy game there now . Onwards and upwards  :D

I see we have been drawn with Republic of Ireland, Germany, Poland, Georgia and Gibraltar in the 2016 European Championship qualifiers. Tough group, but that's good. At football, Scotland tends  to perform better against better sides.

Strachan has something that the previous few managers have lacked. The respect of his players. He was one of the best players Scotland ever produced and has also managed at top club level, they know that. Don't know if they will qualify or not, but like you I am more optimistic than I have been for a long time.

Great game for the neutral to watch, both sides played well, but Scotland seemed to sit back in the second half and gave the French a chance. Unfortunately they took it.

After such a promising start it was an extremely demoralising second half. Some poor decision making and execution through away what should have been a convincing victory.

Scotland are moving in the right direction, but the coaching doesn't seem good enough. Vern Cotter will improve things, but it may not be in time to give Scotland a chance in the World cup. The players are good enough, they just don't seem to be functioning as a unit at the moment. England are the reverse, the individuals are inexperienced and not that special, but they function as a team better.

Players are good but we're far from world beaters , as for a world class coach coming in , i don't think it would make a difference just now unless he was given cart blanch to turn the whole system around . It's our club system that needs funding and an overhaul . But we're slowly getting there :D

I was there yesterday, I'm not a big rugby fan but get free tickets most year, decent seat on the half way line
The atmosphere in Murrayfield after the 2nd try was brilliant.
