Title: Whisky Reviews
Post by: SoldierPmr on April 17, 2015, 09:40:13 PM
Ok so we had a good book and a good dram thread so why don't we have a whole thread dedicated to the Water of Life. Here we can post deals we see in the local markets, reviews and personal opinions of this wonderful drink with so many tastes.

It all tastes like shit and I can't understand why anyone ever has it a second time!
Andy

A product with a history of world wide sales can't be shit. A personal taste sure but that applies to anything. I'm not a regular drinker of the stuff but at the right time, drank at the right pace and in moderation it is a pleasure.

Balvenie, Cragganmore, Macallan

this is exactly what I mean we all know what we like but why don't we put a in depth personal review of each single malt or even blended granular whisky's it might make us try something out of our ordinary tastes and we might just enjoy it.

OK cragganmore is a sweeter easy drinking dram that I love with pancakes. Very smooth and a good starter for folk working their way up to isla malts.

I loathe the stuff but can have a wee go now and then.

I did however have a night some weeks ago with a bottle of royal lochnagar. That was a revelation. So everyone has a whisky.

Generally not my thing but I remember my dad bought a case of Bruichladddich about 20yrs ago, he still has a few bottles left from that - I guess that would make them near 30yrs old now! However I guess (not professing any knowledge of the subject here) that it'd not continue to age because it'd be in a glass bottle instead of a cask?
Saw the film 'The Angels' Share' the other night - a great laugh! :D

E.

You're correct that whisky only matures in the cask.  As a worker in the whisky industry (and a teetotaller) always like reading these kind of threads.

Recently had a bottle of Scapa 16yr old, nice a bit sweet with a quite strong vanilla taste/scent.  Not my usual tipple prefer the smoky Islay malts like Laphroaig.  But I'm quite versatile can adapt quite quickly to most nice whiskies.  Is interesting with whisky, that there some whiskies in the past I did not like but now.  I think that there two factors to this, our palates change as we get older, and surely the whiskies cannot stay the same.

Having been introduced to the 'water of life' for many years I agree with Jim that those of us that are partial to a dram or two have usually started our drinking life consuming alcoholic drinks with sweet mixers, vodka with lemonade, rum and coke etc, but as you get older your taste buds definitely change and drinks that are less sweet are more palatable.
My preference for whisky is more towards the single malt offerings with the Islay matured varieties my most favoured. But this has taken many years developing my taste from softer tones from the lowlands and speyside distillers to the stronger peatier offerings from the islands.  Talisker is definitely a favourite of mine and I would recommend it as a starter for those venturing into the peaty varieties. I did start some years ago with the more delicate speyside malts notably Glenmorangie which I would recommend to anyone wishing to start on their whisky journey. Very light but tasteful and not to harsh on the palate. I would also recommend that no matter which whisky you choose always add a small amount of water, it not only takes away the bite of 'neat' whisky but mellows the taste and enhances the flavours. You will be amazed at how many flavours different whisky's produce.

No matter what your tipple ...enjoy!

Jim

For people just starting Malts I would recommend Aberlour as it's usually on offer some where and for the money it's a good whisky fairly dark but not too over powering with a nice smokey flavour not too strong to put new comers off.

I'm still waiting to try Talisker Storm I don't usually go for unaged malts but I've o ly heard good things from it.

It was a Christmas present from my youngest and her boyfriend but i saw it in Tesco for around £50.

I was a bit shocked and told her it was far too much to spend.

It is nice right enough. One of the best I've tasted and Ive tasted a lot of different malts over the years.

I have quickly become a fan of Aberlour's A'Bunadh.  It's a big bold sherry bomb, highly rated and well liked by most.  Most are right at 60% ABV so sip slowly!  I found a bottle of batch 41 last night, it will be awhile before I can get to it.

I've had alook around the super markets but can't seem to find any I think online and whisky shops are the only option for cask strengths. That's the one I've been looking at as I'm a fan of the 10year old.

I'm still researching the matter with a view to writing a book, not the usual tasting notes and scores out of a hundred stuff, plenty of those exist. The books are needing to be re written really as now you can buy un peated Islay malts (Coal Isla does one) and you can buy loads of Highlands and Speysides that are peated so the old rules no longer apply. I have a dram most evening, just one usually and make a few notes for further reference. I have spent some rather daft amounts of money on whisky from "lost distilleries" (ones that are closed down) and some of them were dreadful and now tend to go for the more mainstream distilleries, but often their obscure bottles. I'm a "friend of the Laphroaig" and have had the pleasure of visiting all but one of the Islay distilleries( Coal Isla was shut for maintenance) and can recommend them although Bowmore is my least favourite. You have to beware of others opinions though as like art, taste is a very personal thing. I have agreed with one writer on a certain whisky and completely disagree with another whisky reviewed by the same writer, I have to say though there are only a couple of "mingers" that I will never buy again. Penderyn the Welsh whisky is bloody awfull to my taste and I am currently drinking a Macallan Gold that is hard work too.

I'd look forward to seeing the finished product or even the work in progress as I am fairly new to the world of malts and you can never beat a bit of guidance. I also make my own notes only a couple of lines for each drink for memory.

My wife suprised my with a bottle of Aberlour 12 year old on Monday I couldn't believe how much smoother it is than the 10 year old.

Also got my self Glenlivet founders reserve ( I usually avoid unaged malts) but I genrally like Glenlivet I feel alittle bit let down by this drink as it doesn't really stand out from the crowd.

Not so easy to find the "unusual" south of the border unless you know of somewhere that specialises in whisky. If you like Aberlour then you may well like Mortlach, used to be well priced and was a collector friend of mines "drinking whisky. My brother has taken to Old Pultney and Highland Park is also another to keep your eyes peeled for. If you find a Port Ellen for less than £300 let me know as there's none left up here.

My mate works for one of the whisky distillers, apparently some of the stated age malts are disappearing.  There is not enough to supply the demand that is why we are seeing more and more bottles that are labelled as reserve.  A small amount of say an 18yr old blended with younger malts, thyw will still charge you an arm and a leg tho.  Inference that reserve means its something special.  I have been meaning to keep an eye on the Scottish Whisky Auction website, there seems to be some reasonable lots on there.

Must try the 12yr old Aberlour, working my way through 2 botthes of the 10yr old that my son won golfing at the weekend!

Well this thread has been dead alittle while.  Any ways on the way back from work I noticed Tesco had some fairly good offers on which left me pretty torn. HP £25 Glenlivet £24 Ardmore £24 and finally Laphroaig 10 for £29. Well I had to go for the Laphroaig and after my first sip it brings back the memories of New Years eve from when I was 16. A good friend and neighbour gave me a glass of the 18 year old and back then I remeber thinking Christ this is horrible far too peaty it's amazing how much taste changes with age. Sadly my neighbour passed away acouple of years ago he was a great guy and this drink brings back the memories I have of him especialy taking me to a strip club in Hackney for my 18th

That's one of those "no age statement" ones, not bad but not quite the "bargain" some of these appear to be, I bought a 12 year old Highland Park as a charity donation for £25, that is a bargain. Tescos had a few on "offer" even the Ardbeg, which I can't remember seeing on offer for years.

I've decided not to buy any malts that don't state the age.  We are being conned by names such as special reserve etc.  I/m told there will be a little of a well aged malt and the rest will be made up with whatever they have a glut of.

I was given a bottle of Ardbeg as a gift several years ago. I think I eventually poured it down the toilet. It is easily the most vile whisky I have tasted I am not keen on west coast malts, I have yet to taste one I really like, but Ardbeg was in a class all by itself.

Whilst in Lewis(and Harris) I tracked down the new Abhainn Dearg which only started in 2008, so I knew what I was getting. Natural colour and non chill filtered it is pale and light on character, but enjoyable because I knew what I was getting. Some of the "big " boys are selling faster than they can make and the quality is really suffering, some of them will pay for this in the long run as customers won't come back again. There are a few acceptable youngsters and to me at least, some that are left in the barrel for far too long and at the end of the day it's down to taste. I mean some people drink lager and Buckfast and apparently like it.

The range of malt whiskies available is very large and there is a great deal of difference between some of them and similarities between others. Personally I have never been able to see the attraction of the smoky/peaty island malts. I once won a bottle of Lagavulin in a shooting club raffle, had one drink, and gave it away. I thought it was disgusting. The smell was just like toilet cleaner. On the other hand The MacCallan and Dalwinnie are nearly perfect as relaxing evening drinks for consumption while reading a good fishing book. Glenmorangie is also very tolerable. But really it is I am sure just a matter of personal taste.

If someone asked me to try as many as possible to help evaluate them I wouldn't refuse. One would need to try quite a number before being sure of one's views.

Abit of a bump here.

Laphroaig quater cask another Unaged statement though a very nice whisky for the peat lovers at 48% not abbad whisky especialy as its on offer in ASDA for £25 while the 10 year old is £26.99

Aberlour A'bunadh the batch I got stood at 60.1% at first I was alittle put off as it didn't taste how I expected Aberlour to taste but once air had got into the bottle it turned out to be a really nice sherry malt.

If you get the timing wrong it goes very bitter. It usually tastes like a slightly sugary mineral water. It can also ferment after 3 days making it vinegary.

I am avoiding non age statement whiskies more and more, on a recent visit to a local distillery, they told us most of their "main brand" was "mostly 4 or 5 years old, yet it is dearer than a couple of well liked 12 year olds, someone's having a laugh. I shall call in at Dalwhinnie and Talisker on my to get the ferry, will pop in the new Harris one at Tarbet, but they won't be selling whisky yet, I tried the Lewis Abhainn Dearg and I wasn't too impressed.

I have toured a fair few distilleries over the past few years and have seen the rise in "fancy named, no age statement" brands, some have some old whisky in them, but the bulk is much younger. Some I do like, the Quarter Cask from Laphroaig is one in particular, but I think some are cashing in on the surge for Malt and just using younger stuff as a filler to fill the shelves in shops, the Macallan Gold is one in particular, I am told by those in the trade, that one is a big mistake by a big player.

I suspect the price is more an indication of the number of bottles available rather than the quality of the whisky. A good example that springs to mind is Lagavullin, their standard 16yo bottling is to my mind a lovely dram and can be bought for around £50. Couple of year short ago my wife bought me a bottle of 12yo which cost around £72 but it was very rough by comparison.

On the no age statement whisky, by avoiding these you run the risk of cutting off your nose to spit your face. Aberlour a'bunadh is a great example, a lovely dram which to tastes like a mix between an island and a speyside.  Others I would recommend would be glenfiddich IPA and XX, there are plenty others out there.

Apparently glen fiddich do not bottle a whiskey under 12yo even in their non age statement bottling.

That's what I was told using younger malts in these unaged malts due to the demand for malt whisky.  What gets me is that they then try and punt it as something special.  I would rather buy the 12 yr  malt form Aldi at £19.99.  Everybody's taste is different and I believe our tastes change as we get older as does whisky.  I have never liked Glenfiddich any form but recently got a present of Select Cask as a present(only available in duty free), which I am enjoying.

Laphroaig Select and Birch sap makes a different drink.

Didn't notice this before - that's an interesting idea to try next spring :) The sap I collect gets used to make birch syrup.

I tried some Birch Sap after watching Ray Mears extolling the virtues of it , tapped from my own tree down the garden, that boy has no sense of taste, it's minging, I certainly wouldn't put it in decent Malt.
I'd give it another try Burnie, as Liam says, it sounds like you collected it a little too late or kept it too long - even in the fridge 3 or 4 days max. Should just taste like very refreshing water when it's straight from the tree.

I was drinking it straight from the tree in my garden, maybe my tree wasn't a very good vintage that year, it just tasted like chewing a piece of wood to me lol.

I can see how that would put you off :)
I usually collect mine early to mid April - if you are too early nothing much comes out. You are supposed to collect the sap before the buds start to grow (end April usually) and definitely before any leaves start to flush - I've not experienced it but any sap collected after the tree has started to flush is supposed to have a bad taste.

The root system wakes up first and weeks before you will visibly see active swelling to bud burst. Early Feb to late March will have birch sap flow. Much in alignment with maple sap collection in Canada. I had quite heavy flow on a large birch stump this year in the first week of Feb with snow on the ground. The buds need to have that carb input before bud break. I do not know if there is a "quality" variation during that early spell but it must come before leaf growth or you would risk have ploem downward flow mixing into the initial upwards xylem only flow when you might be trying to tap the"sap".

That sounds a very likely reason for the poor taste in the sap you are supposed to get if you collect it too late. Early on there is no problem with the quality of the sap, just the rate you can tap it. There is some variation between individual trees, and season to season, and I usually start doing some test drills in March but usually find the flow doesn't get going well until April - by well I mean one tree filling a 5 litre bottle in less than 24 hours :) I'll save some syrup for you this spring coming :)

Incidentally, in collecting sap for making the syrup; it might be worth having a hydrometer to check the density of the sap you collect and through a diary of dates of collections and locations... you could work out which trees and where and when give you the most sugars in the sap..? That'd help save energy in the boiling off stage...?

E.

Sounds like a good idea Tony but I suspect I'm a bit disorganised for that. At the scale I'm working at I don't know it would make a huge difference to the volume being reduced. I guess I'm reducing the sap by over 90% and probably nearer to 95%.

Apologies for the diversion of the whisky thread. If you like Strathspey malts try the Aultmore (near Keith) distillery.  If you like the a'bunadh you may well like the Aultmore cask strength.

I've heard that Macallan is going back to putting age on their bottles rather than made up balderdash, no idea if that is true. It must be said that before all this "colour" thing Macallan was a very reliable and consistent whisky and their 12 year old was great value as you got everything that was in a £250 bottle but just less of it in terms of depth of taste and refinement. You just couldn't go wrong with it.

As for the Isle of Lewis distillery, let's put it this way I took one smell of it and refused to drink it. I am expecting the Harris people to do a much better job.

I've had a couple of them but can't remember if it was the American oak or not. The standard 12 year old is nice stuff, reminded me of Oban.......to be fair I generally like every whisky I try

The Auchentoshan American Oak is rather nice, if light.
Watch the ASDA website, they (occasionally) have £40+ malts down to £25ish, usually without an age statement, but I can live with that.

Title: Re: Whisky Reviews

Depends on how much. A little bit of water (a teaspoon or two in a glass) will "open out" the flavour and can actually make the whisky tastier. I find its better to add water to the south Islay malts, it works very well opening up the peatiness.

With the smoother malts from Speyside, especially the really smoothe ones water can make them a little bit insipid.

Any malt will be spoiled if you add too much water. I think this is where the "no water in malt" comes from: to many people a "whisky and water" is around 50:50 water:whisky. At that level of dilution you will get rid of most of the character of the malt and might as well save your money and go for a cheap blend.

Really all down to individual tatse
Title: Re: Whisky Reviews
Post by: Bobfly on August 03, 2018, 11:44:04 PM
I did read fairly recently research confirming the a little water does indeed release more flavour. Swedish research quoting chemical info!! I put a bit in but 10% might be about all. Speysiders can be a tad bland for me but I cant remember ever saying no.
Title: Re: Whisky Reviews
Post by: Robbie on August 04, 2018, 12:27:37 PM
I usually add a little water, but as others have said the amount varies on the whisky. The first time I try a new dram i will try it neat and then add a little water in stages trying it as i go. A little water is usually a few drops.

I find that many younger cask strength whisky have such high alcohol contents that they usually benefit from a little more water. Having said that I still add water in really small amounts just in case.

50/50 is usually applied to the likes of grouse, bells etc.

I picked up a bottle of Glenallachie Distillers Edition in Morrisons the other day, only £15.  Selling on some websites at £30 a bottle.  Glenallachie appears to have been a Chivas distillery now in private ownership.  Morrisons also had Loch Lomond at £18.  I'll have a wee tasting session of the Glenallachie at the weekend.

Its interesting how peoples tastes differ borderbob is the first person that I've heard of that did not take to Monkey Shoulder.  On the other hand unlike him I don't really take to the like of Chivas Royal Salute.

Not so much a Swedish one he gave me last year - good but not so much I wanted a second bottle.
And I am afraid no-one much liked the Welsh whisky despite it getting quite good reviews.

GlenAllachie is not a distillery known for many bottlings, but they have just entered the fray with a selection of fine looking drams, from 10 years upwards, rather than the glut of no age statement "lower quality" stuff from the big guns. There's 4 single barrel bottlings from different woods of your choice, all at cask strength with no chill filtering or colour added. I plumped for a 12 year old from a virgin oak barrel(only virgin I'm likely to get to grips with these days lol) at 61.7 percent, certainly clears the sinuses, very potent and at just under £50, a decent buy. There's also 3 others on offer, I forget what they were.

Had high hopes for this Mortlach sold to me on the advice it was the "new flora & fauna". It is not; it was pleasant enough but well outclassed by some admittedly stiff competition including a superb single-cask Edradour, another single-cask 62% Speyside and the 21-year old Parliament.

Having recently having a birthday that warranted the gifting of lots of whisky, I though I'd pass on my comments.
English Whisky(from my son who lives near the distillery in Norfolk) is acceptable now it's getting some age to it, still too young for my taste, this bottle was a limited number run with a label with poppies on raising a bit of cash for the British Legion, I might have kept it but the box was damaged and I was thirsty.........................better with a splash of water in it.
Caol Ila went next(this was a couple of miniatures) and were most acceptable, but then I like Islay malts even the low peated ones like this one.
Bunnahabain  went next a peated one with no age statement and extremely pleasant, this was one of the first Islay malts I tried back in the early 1980's when I lived doon sooth, fast becoming one of my favourites.
I am now part way down a bottle of Cardhu, a whisky I haven't drunk since the 1970's, this one's called "Gold Reserve" and it really is quite nasty, no age statement, but I don't need to be told that the majority of it is less than 5 years old. Not to my taste, but not as bad as the Macallan Gold I had last year, that was awful stuff.
I have a bottle of Chivas Regal blend, which might come in handy for cooking or decorating and my brother got me a bottle of Laphroaig Lore, which I shall save till last. I was offered a bottle of this when it first came out as I am a "friend" of the distillery, rather expensive, even though most of the whisky is over 15 years old.

Well worth tucking those bottle of Bruichladdich away for a rainy day Tony. You are right whiskey does not age in the bottle, unlike wine.

Whisky doesn't age in the bottles, however the packaging means that collectors want older bottlings, don't throw the boxes away.

We need to get David back for a longer stay and a few more days treking about the moors. We'll need to organise a get together as well JM though I've no idea how this year will work. I'd hoped to be up at the minute but needed to be in work on Saturday and after that was hopeful to be back towards the end of July for a few weeks and then again in early September until the end of the trout season. July is currently looking unlikely just based on virus progress but I need to remain hopeful for September if only to keep the spirits up. Maybe we should have a "Keeping the spirits up" meet up where we get together and drink all David's whisky? Don't tell him the secret plan :-)

What timing !   Just opened this, given to me 3 years ago. 2016 bottling with a decent mix of smoky sweetness. Seems to be well reviewed too. Started up in 2005 at a small farm on Islay. Two barrels with bourbon then sherry. Hits the spot this evening  :D

I am tasting now one of 4 little 40cc bottles given to me in a pack from Aultbea distilery. Labelled as Single malt, Spirit drink. Not called whisky because the label shows 50% proof,  distlled 15 May 2015, bottled 16 June 2016. Presumably if only a year or so before bottling it does not meet the 3 years minimum. Strong at 50 proof but actually light and a sweetness that goes towards a mild hint of hazelnut cream. What would it have been kept in? I did rather expect it to be pretty rough and nasty but it isn't. Weird!
Title: Re: Whisky Reviews
Post by: Bobfly on June 19, 2020, 12:51:57 AM
It is not too close to favourites from Islay !!!  Pale colour and somehow a hazelnut in the background. What barrels did it come from? Tiny bottles sealed in wax.

After trying it, a quick update. WOW! Absolutely not subtle with masses and masses of flavours and needs plenty of ice. Could not be more different to a good malt in its approach with most of its impact upfront. But very enjoyable to sip in the evening.

My wife acquired a bottle of Malt (long story) and she has for ages refused to let me open it. But our son goes home tomorrow after a 3-week stay and last night she relented.
A powerful dram full of flavour with a long finish. And I suggest a bargain at the Amazon price of £64 although I have been warned that as they are from single casks quality can vary. This cask is a cracker.

Export sales to the USA seem to have gone down 30% or so due to the tariff increase, aside from the collapse in air travel, and who knows how many balls will be thrown in the air with Brexit come the end of December.

2 things you should know about whisky
first you should not keep it in lead cyrstal decanters, the lead is dissolved into the drink and can harm you.
second when you open a whisky air gets in to the bottle and oxidises the liquid severely changing it's taste.
You will be glad to know there are also 2 solutions
first get us all round and we will drink as fast as we can to save you from certain harm
second you could give it all to me for safe disposal............................................ :crap

I'm an Old Pulteney fan. I have not tried this version of their liqueur but I did an earlier one - which was not for me. Too sweet, even more so than Drambuie (which I quite like now and again with plenty of ice). But this is just my preference.

Ooof !!!! That sounds very good. One to watch climbing up and down the inside of the glass.

Whilst in Argyll I used to do forestry work for both Islay and Jura estates and would spend evenings with the factor for both who lived at Bridgend on Islay. The estate was paid in barrels for the peat cutting rentals paid by the several distilleries. These gradually accumulated in the cellars of the big house. We would have drams of this and that was so fuming around the rim you could probably set fire to it like warmed brandy on the Xmas pud.  :D :D

Three of my mates tried this one in the last week or two. Very good apparently.

Quite pricey for a vatted malt, but some of them are very pleasant to drink, not had that one, I only buy single malts these days and haven't been in a pub for well over year to try a dram of this, will look out for it though.

The whisky sampler of Birnam sees all sorts of whisky appear at the fishing hut. Like you, we think single malts are the y to go, but just occasionally a blend appears that is drinkable. (There is a long list in the "avoid" column). So I passed on the "heads up".

Was in Sainsbury's today and they had a lot of malts on sale. Too many to list but some respectable names. Some prices were reduced from £42 to the £20s,, and I think some were just £20.

For years, my go-to whisky was Macallan but I was priced out of my favourite 18-year old – and I also thought the quality had fallen off.
I switched to Glendronach especially their Parliament version but in the Aberlour specialist whisky shop today I was warned that when the current Parliament is replaced the new bottles will be different - being chill filtered and bottled at 43% rather than 48%.
Just repeating what I was told but the assistant seemed very knowledgable.

Have a couple of bottles of the Parliament and a very good half it is i find most of the Glendronach bottles to be very good to get it at the right price is the key

Was in Mull for the last week and finally visited Tobermory Distillery for the Warehouse 1 experience, not bad value for money considering you sample a 25yr, 19yr and 17yr and come away with a Glencairn Copita. The 25yr was a sublime Manzanilla Sherry cask finish but at £350 a bottle it was more than I was willing to spend! The 19yr Ledaig Oloroso was nice too, very smoky! I came away with a bottle of the 17yr Pedro Ximinez, was 90% as good as the 25yr but less than half the price, quite cool that it was hand bottled there too.

If you like hand bottled, next time you are in the far north call in at Old Pultney in Wick. They let you bottle and label (with your name) your own from a single cask. Good whisky too.

That sounds class, I fancy Islay for a fishing/whisky tour but I should be up north next year and a stop at Wick sounds good for both too.

All the encouragement I need  :).
Very sweet and rich nose. Powerful and warming first taste and long finish but (at the risk of sounding as if I know what I am talking about) perhaps a bit light in the middle!
Neither my son nor I would have known it was not a Scottish malt and we would have tried to place it from somewhere in Speyside.
Last night we were drinking the excellent Glendronach Parliament (old style) and while the Swiss is not in the same league neither is it completely outclassed.
A very interesting bottle to bring out with whisky-loving friends and what remains will puzzle several of mine.
The professional opinion is below.

Having been on my self imposed dry spell(I don't drink when there's no "R" in the month, gives my kidneys a rest lol), I'm trawling the 'tinternet for something a bit out of the ordinary for my starter. Had a look in the shop in Aboyne, but not quite finding what I'm looking for, so I may go to the Edradour distillery and see what they have in the Signatory brand, most of which is non chill filtered and un coloured, often single barrel and numbered bottles, it may be me being conned by the sales blurb, but I swear I can tell the difference. Many moons ago I picked up a Port Ellen, but at over a grand a bottle, that's not happening this year.

It's a few years ago now, but they had some very special barrels stored in that place, not drinking whisky, some well over 50 years old so probably close to undrinkable, but the collectors will have a field day, not just Edradour, he has whisky from distilleries long since demolished.

I have been drinking a variety of different "whiskys" and bourbons recently; so many to choose from and so little time ;D
I picked up this bottle from the House of Malt both because it looked interesting and as they had very little bourbon in stock (the good stuff apparently sells as soon as it comes in). Tried it last week with a whisky fanatic friend and we both loved it. Obviously not a malt but taken with ice it was rich, long and sweet without being cloying. Very nice.

I like a nice smokey Islay. I got a bottle of Smoke head the other week. For me it's one to avoid personally. I found it very young tasting if that's a way of describing it with a sort of alcohol burn after taste. Laphroaig and Ardbeg have nothing to worry about here. I find Laphroaig select fairly weak tasting compared to the 10 year old but I'd take that over Smoke head any day.

Another whisky where marketing is more important than the product I think.

The select is very young whisky, not my taste at all, to make up for short supplies due to mis planning most distilleries' are chucking out no age statement bottles for the most part un drinkable for me, I don't them too old, but there's no character of the distillery in these young 'uns, 8 to 15 years old are right for my taste. There are some fine whisky with no age statement Laphroaig Quarter Cask a case in point, but that is mostly over 5 years old. Select is mostly under 5.

Excellent bottle from an excellent distillery. I am a fan of Glendronach but you need to be careful if buying their Parliament as the new version is no longer bottled at 48% and is chill filtered. There are still bottles of the previous version around but they are pushing or exceeding £200 now.

I'm a fan of the distillery myself too. I've also watched recent events and witnessed some steep price rises across multiple distilleries. :)

I also have an unopened bottle of the Allardice. But I'm waiting until I've killed this bottle and another before opening that.

I'm also a fan of GlenAllachie. Their 10 year old cask strength releases are pretty good. Billy Walker has been doing a sterling job since he took over there.

Port Ellen, Brora and Rosebank. All legendary names all in the process of reopening.

I bought an Islay collectors set years ago. Two Caol Ila, two Lagavulin and one Port Ellen 20cl bottle. I was going to open it but then googled how much these things sell for these days. So it's collecting dust somewhere.

Last night I enjoyed a GlenAllachie tasting at a local specialist shop. They'd sent a rep down to host along with the store owner.

In addition to the 8 YO, 12 YO and batch 9 cask strength 10 YO they had chosen to focus on the different woods they use which was a nice change.

We also tried a 7 year old Hungarian oak side by side with an 8 year old Scottish oak. It's quite amazing just how different these two were. The 2012 cuvee wine cask was good too. But overall the 12 YO won it for me. And I'm now in possession of a bottle sitting next to the cask strength.

I've had a few nice whiskys recently but forgot to mention them. I cracked open this Octomore this weekend. I thought Ardbeg was a peat monster with its 50ppm. This is a lovely drink but too expensive to be a Friday night drinker.

It is and it is Ginger Wine.

About the Distillery:
One of the oldest names in Scottish distilling, John Crabbie & Co. was established in Leith, Edinburgh in 1801. Considered a pioneer of his time, John Crabbie produced a range of spirits and drinks including whisky, gin and ginger wine. John Crabbie & Co. was also one of the first independent bottlers of whisky. Fast forward over 200 years and the legacy of innovation and quality continues to this day.

Crabbies may be a bit smaller now. Our ginger wine mixer bottle for Whisky Macs has a Kirkcaldy postcode on the label and the words "Made in the UK for Crabbies Ltd.".

Who is Crabbies owned by?
The brand name Crabbie's is now owned by Halewood International Holdings and used in relation to alcoholic and non-alcoholic ginger beer.

For interest, this is one review of the Crabbie 22. I do not get all the subtle flavours found by the reviewer but it is one very interesting dram and I will be very sorry when the bottle is finished! I shall keep my eyes open for other bottles from Crabbie.😀

"Just 253 bottles of this new single cask bottling of 22 Years Old Orkney Single Malt Whisky, finished for extraordinary flavour in a rare Palo Cortado sherry cask are being released under the signature of renowned master blender Dr Kirstie McCallum, who took charge of the Crabbie whisky portfolio earlier this year.

After spending 21 years in ex-bourbon casks, this peated Orkney single malt was transferred to a highly coveted Palo Cortado sherry cask, hand selected by Dr Kirstie, before being left to rest for a final six months at Crabbie's warehouse in Edinburgh's port of Leith area.

Bottled at 47.5%, the influence of this unusual sherry is described as Amontillado on the nose and Oloroso on the mouth and gives a wonderfully complex and rounded quality to the spicey smokiness of the finished whisky.

A nose of dried fruit, vanilla fudge, forest berries and a hint of peppery smoke lead to flavours of sweet berries and cream, caramel toffee, dried fruit and hints of dark chocolate and coffee, followed by a long, smoky finish."

I'm working  my way through a bottle of Crabbie's "Yardhead" Single Malt...they are punting it as a base for Whisky Macs...it's "ok" is the best I can muster..

I bought the Yardhead a few years ago when it was on offer.  Would not buy it again it was dreadful. Pleasantly surprised by Tamnavulin matured in a white wine cask.  I'm also supping a Glen Scotia 15yr old its nice as well.

Had this wee gem given to me as a fav. It's up there on the Richter scale at 60+% proof and once you add a wee touch of water is very pleasant would I pay £60 odd quid a bottle answer is no but will slowly work my way through it. As like most things that are free taste a lot better.

Not sure just how many of the forum enjoy the odd dram or three. I only have a few on a sat night along with a few can of Guinness hated the stuff for most of my life but for whatever happened I do like a couple of cans well they do say stout is good for you!
Anyway, back to what I meant to say.
For those who like a nightly nip here is one for you found completely by chance and called Ledaig Sinclair Series Rioja Cask Finish
And it is what it says on the bottle and for me one of the best drinking dram for just over £31 quid a bottle [hunt about for it ] Amazon was the best buy for a while and well worth it.

I do like a Guiness not keen on it from a can though.  Tesco have canned Black Heart Stout made by Brewdog its nice and a lot cheaper.  Discovered another stout in Asda called Forged which is brewed in Dublin also very nice. You can get both for about £5.75 for 4 cans.

Over Christmas my wife bought our son some of the new larger cans of Guinness that have to be opened with a special device (£30 - but he is her only son😀) that "smooths the bubbles out". Sounds like marketing hype but although not a Guinness fan I tried a can and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I also got a bottle from Amazon - very nice and easy drinking dram.

Has anyone tried the Lidl Ben Bracken? Today's Times rated it with this write up -

"Ben Bracken Islay Single Malt Whisky, Scotland
40 per cent, 70cl, £18.49
Britain's best value supermarket single malt is a dreamy peat, tobacco smoke and seaweed-scented gem."

Some time ago a friend (!) sandbagged me with a surreptitious glass of I think Lidl Ben Bracken whisky. It was not a great dram but not at all bad and could not argue with the price (think it was about £18).
I have also had some pretty good wines from Lidl.

After 10 years I got around to getting another bottle of Aberlour a'bunadh. I put a little bit of water with it to mellow out the alcohol. And it's a really nice sherry bomb.

bruichladdich classic laddie. Again a lovely whisky with a good price point. I think it will be a staple in my collection.

bruichladdich Port Charolette. A great peated whisky and another that will be replaced when it's empty. Not as heated as the octomore or as thick but it's got a great price point for the quality. I think I prefer it over the Ardbeg 10.

I have just taken my last anti biotic tablet from a three month session to try and clear a year long infection since having my prostate lasered out. I haven't had a dram since November(which could explain my grumpy absence), tomorrow I will be hitting all the whisky bought for me for Christmas AnCnoc. Singleton. Meikle Toir, Glenfiddich, Tobermory, Deanston and Balvennie, tough job, but I'm the man to do it lol.

A bit of a long shot but do any of you know where I can get Springbank 10 for a reasonable price? I just can't seem to find it anywhere and when I do it's ridiculously over priced.

I think you can only get it direct from the distillery shop by going in. I believe  they can sell out within a day or two as the American market has taken all the demand.

It says on the website they accept cards so I thought you would be able to buy online by contacting them.

Unfortunately not. I've looked at god knows how many of the outlets they suggest  with them all being sold out.
