I'll be giving Pike ago this year I have not caught a pike since I was a kid. (Be prepared for some questions Dave )
I'll definately be having more of a go for pike this winter , If I can get some cheap stocking foot waders I'll be toughing it out on the float tube for them
Grayling....a stunning fish and good on the fly
that's the spirit chaps! tally-ho :D
I've not caught a grayling since I was about 13, used to get them in the nith

For winter tubing you will need neoprene waders
A bit of lure fishing for pike and a few grayling trips should see me through till February when Lomond opens again.
There is always the saltwater FF for Bass but it isn't looking great in my usual hunting ground this year. I've no doubt someone somewhere will have had a bumper season for them but It's been a real bummer for me. I know quite a few others who have blanked all year for them in the south west. I've pretty much thrown in the towel myself unless I meet someone who's had some joy.
I'm hearing a lot of talk about widespread illegal razor clam fishing having a serious effect on them and on the areas they frequent.
Log burner , nice malts . cuban cigars , free sky telly . What more do you need till March 15th . :D :D

Cod, hoppin' around on the rocks in the pitch black fallin' on your arse in the freezin' rain, what's not to love eh?
Lots of beach fishing, goose blootering and maybe even sit on a pier for a skate if I can be bothered.

Which pier do you use? would it be near the fish processing factory or the other side of the road from the ferry?(Something I am thinking I might just try before by back gives out completely)
After being pitifully low for months the local river is now perfect.

The fish processing pier on Scalpay is out of bounds with a seriously grumpy manager.
The wee pier in West Loch Tarbert is where the main fishing effort is concentrated at this time of year (a 180lb fish was taken there last night).
Breasclete pier has been giving up skate regularly all summer and a 129lb male skate was taken there on Monday night.
There are plenty other places where skate can be hooked.....its getting them ashore that can be a problem!
Peppo's fish and chip shop in Arbroath used to do a superb skate supper. :D
Gentlemen if I may respectfully offer an opinion. I meet a lot of anglers who wax lyrical about fishing in the depths of winter for 'the lady of the stream'. Most of these poor saps have never ever done it. Standing bollocks deep in a freezing cold icy river trying to find fish which are shoaled up 3 miles upstream of you or 2 miles downstream of you is not fun. It hurts and hurts a lot. If you want to fish for grayling do it now before it gets so cold that your dick freezes to your leg and the fish will still rise freely for hatching flies. My other issue is the fact that grayling are not ladies of the stream they are in fact greedy bastards that eat loads of chowder. If you fish rivers where there are grayling in numbers then trout don't get a look in cos most of the grayling that I have encountered can fight a badger

Great post, cheered me up no end!
You won't get me wading in the winter, I prefer trotting for grayling from the bank. It still can be bloody cold tho!
Jim
I love it on those really cold days when the sun shines and there's no wind. Happens about once every 5years though

I use a pair of mountain hardwear compressor pants under waders and kayaking/canoeing. just had a google and they're difficult to find now. i'll have a word with my MH mate and see what's new....

It is still salmon season pretty much everywhere. Why don't you all go and do some proper fishing for a proper species?

Think I shall try and get fish on a Peter Ross to annoy the purists.

Burn the heathen, burn him, burn him burn him
Flying C is fine, it's not like it's real fishing, just these transitory silver things. :makefun
I would burn you too if it not for the fact that I have been polishing the cutlery and putting new line on my coffee grinder in preparation for my visit to the mighty Tay.
In my defence, I would say that I can hardly see the other bank, never mind cast a fly over.

I recommend 5000 casting lessons. Now I wonder where you might get those from?

no sense of adventure these salmon fishers; turn up in their horse-drawn range rovers, waddle down manicured lawns to a gravel-bedded pool, wave their rods around for a few mins to the approving nods of their
serf ghillie, then waddle out for a slap-up lunch in a luxury hut. repeat ad-nauseum.... day after day, year after year..... zzzzzzzzz
It's called a touch of class Dave. :8)

ah; that'd be why it's escaped me, then
Anyway enough of this waffle.
The sun is shining, the spate is dropping, time to get out there for an alternative blank.
"Fly box" sorted out, ready to go. :8)
[attachimg=1]
I see you're expecting to lose a few, then?
Probably, but the actual number lost will depend on how long I last before my tits fall of with the boredom of it.
As long as I don't lose the anti-kink vane, I only have the one.
I have had some of those lures since I was at school in the 1960s.
Problem I have is I find anything other than fly fishing so tediously boring I don't do much of it. Winter sea bait fishing for example - come on - how ******* dull is that? We have arguably the best cod fishing in Scotland here, but lobbing out bait and standing around on the beach or rocks I can only do once or twice a year and never alone - it's a social occasion first, fishing second.
I'm afraid I am a dyed in the wool trout fly fisher, mainly river, and the colour is so fast it's indelible.

It will be the train a corn dobbie sandwich and a flask for me Dave :D
Chris.
Fred its a pity you don't have the original box for that Abu Krill. I believe that you can get a few quid for them on flee bay.
Jim
Well, nothing worth reporting today. The river was perfect and I didn't see a fish.
I reckon the great river fly fishing goddess Elitis smote me down for worshiping the false gods Flying C and Rapala.
Fantastic day out though. I walked for miles in the warm sun. What a tonic! Not a breath of wind or a single wind turbine, of which there are many up by the Bervie, was seen to move.
The new Daiwa 8 foot spinning rod I got the other day is very nice. Perfect length and weight for these small waters.
Fred,
PM me your address as I might have a few anti-kink vanes in an old box I have and I'll send them through.
They are only gathering dust with me .
Billy
It's OK Billy I had a few on order from FleaBay, they were here when I got home. Many thanks for the offer. :D
Condoms? Anti kink vanes? You are a big bunch of hairy northern hooligans. Go and chuck a fly at them. It works wonders and is good for the soul. Maybe some of you will see the bright bright light and stop chasing those dirty spotty brown vermin. Inside every trout angler is a salmon angler dying to be set free. Don't fight it brothers do mot fight it :crap

It's those damned alien pikeys in Lochindorb ( allegedly) eating our own native born German trout out of house and home that get my goat.
The leven was looking great today when I walked the dogs so I'm heading down tomorrow before my backshift. No crass and nasty spinning for me though Fred, I'm a better class of Northern hairy ;)
If you ever decide to fish it AFTER your Friday night back shift you'd better know Kung Fu and have tour blood group tattooed on your shoulder !
From what I've been told about the Leven spinners are the least of your problems. Leave the spoons at home and take kitchen knives
I've got two 13 stone dugs keeping the edgy
one or two of my fleas'd keep 'em at bay :8) they feckin' terrify me!
