Title: a braw ale
Post by: andy m on February 23, 2017, 04:23:24 PM
it seems that the micro brewerys are doing well these days. most stores have a good selection of fine bottled ales. i try to taste a new one often and have found some cracking beers. was wondering what good ales have yous lads and lassies tried that is worth trying . i have noticed as well that some of the beers have a good dunt to them 6/vol and higher in some cases. i used to like a strong ale called fowlers wee heavy but think its no longer brewed, cheers andy m

If you are in the Callendar area or passing through call in at the Lade Inn- just north of Callendar at Kilmahog it can be seen on your left. Open from 12 noon they have an extensive selection of Scottish real ales to browse in a little shop beside the inn.
Get there soon, the inn is up for sale. They are also online, but shipping costs, whilst reasonable considering, may put you off.

Actually, it's hard to find a bad one these days. Bottled ale has come a long way.   Alex put me on to this one, it is very nice.

The joker IPA is my joint favourite along with Caesar Augustus also by Williams brothers, it's a lager IPA hybrid (so the bottle says) and its nectar!

Morrisons have Marstons EPA (English Pale Ale) at 98p a bottle.  For those with a taste for Newcastle Brown Ale, Aldi do a beer called North Bridge Ale.  Not quite the same but at £1.19 a bottle you can't complain.  I usually pick up a new beer to try every so often, but my regulars are Old Speckled Hen and Hobgoblin.

Another Williams bros ale to try if you like porter is Midnight Sun. Was my favourite buy from Tesco until they stopped stocking it last year in favour of the not so nice IMO Guiness porter.

This stuff is fantastic if your lucky enough to have a store that stocks it. My local store stopped and I don't know why as it was soon selling out when people discovered how good it was.

Anyone passing through Edinburgh should pay a visit to the Beerhive in Bonnington; a cracking wee independent off-shop specialising in a wide range of ales http://www.thebeerhive.co.uk/ (http://www.thebeerhive.co.uk/)

I came across this earlier in the week on another forum, a 1971 price list for draft ales [apparently from the Daily Mirror of 21st March 1971 six weeks after decimalisation]

Inflation and duty have made quite a difference in the intervening 46 years
