Title: Chooky Embra
Post by: Inchlaggan on April 09, 2021, 02:42:48 PM
Harley Davidson Owners (HOGS) support muscular dystrophy charities worldwide. The Duke was patron of the UK one. A fundraising event was held at the Hard Rock Cafe, London, featuring the very best of UK heavy metal. The manager became very concerned at the number of bikes and leather-clad bikers that turned up and declared the event cancelled. A heated debate ensued, ending with the manager threatening to call the police. No sooner were the words out of his mouth than four police motorcyclists rode up followed by a Norton Commando whose rider dismounted and removed his helmet. You've guessed of course. Nobody knew he was going to turn up and the manager changed his tune. "Would his Royalness pose for photographs with the Hard Rock Cafe Logo?" You get to guess again. He and Tommy Iommi (Black Sabbath) admiring and discussing a limited edition, aluminium Fender Stratocaster will be one of my enduring memories.

Not everyone's cup tea for sure, The Chooky was the man the  left loved to hate,  and  I have no doubt the f***wit element on soshul meeja will be frantically typing insults on their phones and tablets from the safety and anonymity of their mother's back bedrooms.

Deliciously politically incorrect, he was very much a man from another era, loyal, dedicated, a great servant to the UK and a tower of strength to Her Majesty The Queen.

A founder and fundraiser for the World Wildlife Fund.

How many young Brits were introduced to The Great Outdoors as a result of his schemes?

Another fellow angler passes on to That Great Loch In The Sky.

R.I.P. Sir!

One of an ever dwindling band who actually fought for our freedom in WWII and I'd rather spend another hour in his company than many "important " people who are around today.

He'll be greatly mourned by many of us.

RIP, Your Royal Highness.

I'm not even vaguely a religious person, but if I'm wrong and there is an afterlife I hope The Duke and our late great friends Malcolm and Bruce Sandison are casting a fly together right now on some celestial trout loch.  :D

I am not religious and am a republican that regards the concept of monarchy as a medieval anachronism that has no place in modern society. That said it would be churlish of me not to the salute passing of  Philippos Andreou of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderberg-Glücksburg and the House Windsor (Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) for his contribution to the war effort, conservation, for developing the magnificent D0fE award scheme, his support of technology/industry/innovation and being a cantankerous politically incorrect wit.

I think Phil the Greek gave up shooting tigers about the same time as Attenborough gave up "collecting" for London Zoo, but, shag one sheep, as they say. It is also rather easy to be philanthropic with other people's money. But accepting the obligation to shake the hand of the Republican who gloried in his part in murdering your favourite uncle (and his fourteen year old grandson) is a service I would not endure.

I like to think of The Duke as the John Cleese of the establishment.  :D

There is a well written thoughtful piece by Effie Deans about Captain Tom and Prince Philip. People from an age and of a type we will not see again.

Sadly but not at all unexpected the cyber nats have been attacking The Duke on anti-social media.  The are even attacking the first minister for her words of support for The Queen which I have to say was measured and dignified.   These scum are a disgrace and an embarrassment to Scotland and people like that are the very reason that I do not support independence and no longer vote SNP. I do not wish to live in a country where extremists like that have any kind of  influencing  voice. They remind me  too much of the hateful National Front of the 1970s.

I was stupid enough to get into a Twitter spat with a separatist. At the end, it crossed my mind that if the Nats take control and that that ever became the majority view whether I'd feel comfortable in Scotland ever again. It was mind boggling in its viciousness.

Their very start was exactly as a Nationalist right wing party, fellow travellers with other nationalist across Europe. At their 1939 annual conference after WWII started, two motions were agreed. One was against conscription in Scotland so no Scots would be fighting other fellow nationalists. The second was against women being used to help the war effort by working in factories and similar.
Another entertaining policy swivel is that in 1975 they were the only party in Scotland voting against the UK joining the Common Market.

The vast majority of SNP people and their supporters are good decent people Vaughan, there is however a  sizable downright nasty element that they just downright fail to condemn and disown.

I think that many do not realise what the (SNP) Scottish Government is enabling:

It was Prince Phillip who first introduced me to Hillwalking & Flyfishing!!!!
Well sort of!!!
For it was while preparing for my bronze & silver Duke of Edinburgh  award expeditions among the lochans and hills above Lochgilphead that I first developed a passion for Angling and Hillwalking!
For that I am thankful.

In times of Covid constraints you still cannot beat the British Armed Forces for putting on a better show than any other country in the world. I hoped it was relayed across to "our friends in the EU".

I enjoyed the spectacle if it correct to enjoy a funeral, as with all funerals you do feel the families pain.

The seating arrangements certainly left the Queen appearing to be isolated.
Prince Philip is said to have joked in more recent times that he has had his plans set out long since, but that everyone involved in this earlier planning has already now gone ahead of him !

My mother commented, and I didn't see it myself, that when the fired the guns doing the funeral there were images shown from across the nation. In Wales and NI representatives of all the local political parties were standing beside the gun as it was fired. In Scotland there was only Nicola. Even my mum was commenting and saying it was a bit of a scary message. Weird times.
