Title: Fishing boat
Post by: roberth on June 07, 2021, 06:42:52 PM
I'm looking to buy a fishing boat in the next few months, preferably an Orkney Spinner or LongLiner. Where should I be looking apart from the usual sites like eBay and Gumtree?

The big coastal marinas, plus Balloch etc. ??

Boatshed and

I have owned a Spinner and used a Longliner a lot. Forgive me if I am teaching you to suck eggs but they are very different boats. In my experience, a Longliner really needs a proper slipway - but it will cope with pretty much any weather (don't ask me how I know ).

Have a good look at this website -

The Stornoway Sea Angling Club had an Arran 16 for years, which I made the most of. It was a fantastic sea boat.

Out of interest, what would these fetch new and second hand?

I've been looking at one today that has a fresh coat of paint and looks great but the advice I've had from the Orkney Owners site is not to pay too much for a painted boat so it's hard to gauge.

A Mk1 (early 80s) Longliner sold for £1800 on eBay at the weekend. The one I'm looking at is £1900.

What are you wanting the boat for? Sea or freshwater?

Freshwater on big lochs.

If you have a bit of time to spare, and the price reflects it, I would not worry too much about condition. These Orkney boats are very robust and fairly easy to repair. I had a Spinner that I lent to one of my brothers and after a season's use it was returned to me with several holes (one that I could put my hand through) and many deep gouges from encounters with rocks. I am not what you would call "handy" but it did not take me long or cost much to repair the boat and it has since done several seasons on a big loch and is still going strong.

Thanks, I'm pretty handy so not too concerned over maintenance or repairs. I also have garage space where I can store and work on a boat. The Orkney models seem to hold their value too.

Another question - Would a 6hp outboard be adequate on a Longliner? The price and weight take a significant jump from 6hp to 8hp.

Yes 6hp will be plenty. A Longliner is a displacement boat. I used to use a 4hp. You MIGHT find some benefit making headway with a larger engine if you were trying to bash into big waves but you would get very wet in the process!

There not cheap these second hand Orkney Longliner boats but they are first class crafts. The Arran ones whilst clones of the Orkney are usually dearer certainly when new. Is the Spinner not 13 feet as opposed to the 16ft Longliner . If that is the case maybe not so suitable for "Big Lochs"
A 6hp outboard would certainly do at a push but an 8 or 10hp would be better especially if you encounter adverse conditions.

Thanks, I'm going to view a couple of Longliners at the weekend. I'm a bit wary of buying a second hand outboard. The seem to hold their value and many of them aren't much cheaper than new models with warranty.

No bother an outboard along with plant machinery is serviced on an "hours run" basis so if you are buying second hand make sure like your car it has documentation to say what is what. If like you say there is not a lot of difference between old & new go for new. That way you will get full manufactures warranty & after sales unlike buying second hand. Good luck whatever you do.

I'm still looking, I realise the price of boats has increased in the last 18 months but some of the prices for essentially old boats and outboards is ridiculous. I'm not in a hurry so will wait for the right package to come along.

Good boat. As I am sure you know, not a displacement boat so will plane with a bigger engine. I have been on the 14ft version with a 20hp engine doing 20kts.

Yes, it's a nice solid boat. I'm looking to buy a decent 4 stroke outboard now.

You might want to consider a secondary means of propulsion in case the engine fails, can be a smaller outboard or a set of oars if you feel fit enough to row off a big loch.

Clyde Outboard Services are a good outfit. Dealers for many makes and know their stuff. I bought a 4stroke from them recently and know others who would recommend them.

I'm planning to get an auxiliary 4hp as backup to the main outboard.

COS have quite a range of engines, new and used, big and small. I bought a used Mariner 3.5 4stroke that just had a very few hours on it.

I'll check them out, would be more comfortable buying a used motor from a dealer.

They are dealers for most main makes. Have a look at their website.

That's a nice boat you got there - result! You definitely need a 16ft boat for big lochs, an Orkney Spinner would not be adequate.

Where did you pick it up if you don't mind me asking?

It looks like it's original gelcoat rather than painted so you can be sure that it hasn't been holed then repaired and painted. Also, if it hasn't been painted it means you won't have to repaint it every year.

You might struggle to get a brand new outboard at the moment, I bought a new 9.8hp earlier this year but had ordered it last year and waited over 6 months on it coming into stock. I was considering trading in my more portable 4hp in for a Tohatsu 6hp as Clyde Outboards were advertising them at just over a grand, however they don't have any stock despite them showing as available on the website. You might need to phone round the dealers and see what they have. Bear in mind that the step up from 6hp to 8hp more or less doubles the cost of then engine but you will get a twin cylinder which is a lot quieter than a single, as well as the extra horsepower. Twins are quite a bit heavier but not an issue if you don't plan on lugging it around.

Hi, I got it from an advert on Facebook Marketplace. The boat is original gel coat and has remote steering and gears. It was bought new and used lightly unless the previous owner died. The trailer needs some maintenance but towed it home no problem. I'm not in a hurry for an outboard so will keep an eye on the marketplace / gumtrees adverts. Clyde Outboards advised to keep away from eBay as they have a steady stream of engines brought in for repair from eBay that are only good for spares.

You have the right idea. I wouldn't buy an engine without seeing it run first.

Had the Fastliner out on Loch Earn this afternoon. Boats were off today due to the incoming high winds but we were allowed out to test the boat and engine in the bay at Drummond Boats.
