A distant juvenile osprey at Balgavies Loch this afternoon. Not long now until they head for Senegal.

Didn't I read somewhere that some are resident in the south of England and others are overwintering in Portugal?
I recal something similar Sandy. After all Portuguese winter are at least as good as Scottish summers. :D
I can't find anything online but I remembered when I was watching the tracking site that one youngster stayed around the South of England for a few weeks after leaving Scotland.
A few years ago when lobster pot fishing with a friend in December, we saw an osprey also fishing. Both of us have seen plenty of ospreys and were in no doubt.
I reported it to the RSPB and was told there had been other sightings. We were out often afterwards but did not see it again.
They will move south when the fishing local to them slows down. Then off south until they come cross the next stocked fishery providing an easy meal. Probably a good thing as they then avoid most of the savages around the Med trying to shoot any migratory bird that flies close enough.
One over wintered in Spey Bay area a few years back.

Might have been the one we saw off the Cromarty Sutors.
