Last week we had four bags of salt delivered. They are in heavy plastic bags so to get them from the front door to the shed, about thirty metres with two steps and a slight incline, I grab the corner of two and carried them up. At the shed I thought "You are getting weak Birrell" as I had struggled a bit near the end. I went back down for the second pair but this time I only had to carry them to the back door, about ten metres, where I left one and carried the second one up to the shed, again one handed. For the past few days I have been using one to do some weight workouts. Ten squats holding the bag by two corners, one in each hand, and on coming up I was raising my hands until the bag was at head height. It didn't feel too bad and I thought "You aren't that bad yet for 70 :)".

Now the eye opener I decided to put one of the bags into a small rucksack I have so that I can put it on and carry it around a bit just to get used to walking with a weighted rucksack. Once I had it in the rucksack I lifted it to put it on my back and thought "That feels familiar.". I took it into the house and weighed it on the scales...20 Kilos!! My wife told me they were ten kilo bags so I had been carrying forty Kilos to get them up to the shed and had been doing ten squats and lifts with a twenty Kilo bag, that is 200 Kilo squat and 200 Kilo lifts.

Twenty Kilo bags was what I carried as a Postman and that is the weight of rucksack I carry into the hills when camping for a week, although not for a couple of years now.

Not so weak after all :)

Aye the body's fine enough, but the brain can no longer tell the difference between 10 and 20 kgs!
'til a voice as bad as conscience,
rang interminable changes,
on an everlasting whisper,
day and night repeated so-
"Something hidden, go and find it,
Go and look beyond the ranges,
Something lost beyond the ranges,
Lost and waiting for you,
Go."

That's a week gone and I have upped the anti :)

Two miles a day at four miles an hour on the Treadmill.

Ten Squats wearing the Rucksack with twenty kilo.

Ten standing press-ups with the Rucksack on using the freezer to lean on.

Ten waist bends with the Rucksack on using the freezer for balance so I don't overbalance and fall on my face :)

Next week, or maybe the week after, I will wear the Rucksack on the Treadmill too...we'll see how things go :)

Stuck at home I have been sorting through stuff and getting rid of things I will never use again. One item that went was my 80L Bergen with extra side pockets. It was brilliant 20 years ago when I used it on the Ball Pass trek in NZ but now I doubt I could lift it when full let alone yomp over the hills :(

Good for you Sandy. You'll be back to these long wild fishing camping trips before you know it.   :D

I know that Fred. I keep telling Marion that. She goes on the t'mill for twenty to thirty minutes a day and wonders why she isn't losing weight and I tell her it is because she is turning the fat in her legs to muscle. She says she would rather it just went away :)
