When did this new year fireworks thing start?

Not the big organised displays, rather individuals disturbing the peace with their own rockets and bangers.

It is certainly not a Scottish New Year tradition.

Fishtales

They do it for everything now Fred. Christmas, New Year, Birthdays, Weddings and just any old party. They must have money to burn looking at the cost of some of them.
Don't worry, be happy.

Carried it in full, then carry it out empty.

That's what I was wondering, I thought everyone was short of money   ::)

This was the cause of a big argument in Highland Council between those who wanted fireworks etc to celebrate the New Year and those wanted to use the money for alleviating homelessness etc. The fireworks won largely on Council procedural grounds as I understand it.

It would appear we are wrong about it being something new Fred :)

"Fireworks: Noisemaking and fireworks on New Year's eve is believed to have originated in ancient times, when noise and fire were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring good luck. The Chinese are credited with inventing fireworks and use them to spectacular effect in their New Year's celebrations."

Yeah I knew the Chinese have been at it for hundreds of years, I am more puzzled about when ordinary Scots started burning them at new year.

Apparently London took New Year fireworks to a whole new woke level this year with the mayor lecturing the plebs  on climate change while at the same time burning £2 million in fireworks as people froze in their homes.

Robbie

Can't argue with the madness of it, Having lots of animals its always a bit of a concern.

However firework at New Year is not really a new thing here either. It has been happening regularly for f=more than twenty years - I'm referring to small "domestic displays" rather than larger commecial displays and large public event.

There are the fireballs at Stonehaven and other torchlight processions, so fireworks could be taken as a development on traditional use of fire in new year celebrations.

What you need to do is add a walrus to your animals  Robbie.

Robbie

Think we'll just put up with the fireworks  ;D
