Title: Cheap chesties
Post by: Lochan_load on November 19, 2015, 01:56:27 PM
Hey all, I normally wear waist waders for all my fishing as I always find them the most comfortable/versatile etc but since getting a float tube I have the need for some stocking foot chesties (tried my waist waders for this and might as well have worn trunks )
I'm looking for a budget pair so please no one recommend Simms Etc because 'you get what you pay for' ' long term you save money' I don't give a monkeys, absolute max I'm spending is £100 so if anyone can recommend some cheap ones that they have experience with or have links to any they've seen on sale id be very grateful

Cheers,

Andy

Of that type Ocean are by far the best. The budget version is around £50. Issues with his type are that it can be too warm in summer if you walk any distance & can be a bit cold if in water for any length of time. I wear joggies under mine as & when needed. I am on my second pair which have been going for 10 years or more. No holes, no leaks unlike breatheables though I did break the mould & bought Orvis Endura a few years back only wore them twice but very comfortable never the less.

I also use boot-footed Ocean chesties, plus a fleece Long-John if cold weather. I also use neoprene boot-footed chesties. Having to put on wading boots as well as the waders and then flippers as well is a bit of a faff. Also, wading boots are often a lot wider across the sole than the fitted boot type so a wader boot setup can be difficult with heel pocket flippers when already fitted wellie bottom ones are OK.

Andy, I have just ordered Taimen waders "River Pro" or something. Mine are £115 or thereabouts, but they do cheaper versions too.
I am replacing Taimens that are now leaking, but after hard use over two years (thistles, gorse, barbed wire). They do a good range of sizes which is unusual for relatively cheap waders. Taimen are based in Poland, but I find them good to deal with.

If your using your tube from the start of the season, you may want to invest in neoprene waders.  If so, i use http://www.uttings.co.uk/p119344-snowbee-4mm-sft-neoprene-stockingfoot-chest-waders-olive-green-12085/?adwords=true&gclid=CNfyybnZnMkCFVG6GwodQqAKDg (http://www.uttings.co.uk/p119344-snowbee-4mm-sft-neoprene-stockingfoot-chest-waders-olive-green-12085/?adwords=true&gclid=CNfyybnZnMkCFVG6GwodQqAKDg)

If they are only for the tube I would go for neoprenes, as your in the water all the time coolness is not an issue.Constant paddling might wear  cheap breathables fast and good neoprenes are cheap nowadays.

I would agree with shad. I used to do a lot of tubing and if you want to stay warm, neoprenes are a must in my opinion.

Neoprenes for tubing definately, I have 2 sets of breathables and still cant find a warm solution for tubing, i just stick with the thick ones.

As for breathables, stay away from the leeda ones around the £100 mark, mine leaked like hell after about 6 outings, sent them back and now have a brand new pair still in the box under my couch.
Meanwhile when i was waiting for the outcome of the leeda one's i gave diver dave an email, i now have some fully sealed airflo ones that i used all last season without a single problem and they cost me £100 from him, highly recommended.
I steered clear of the drylines as i wasn't sure if they were any use as it says they are a cross between breathable and pvc.

I use a pair of these
http://www.mountainhardwear.com/mens-compressor-pant-1561481.html (http://www.mountainhardwear.com/mens-compressor-pant-1561481.html)

under my drysuit when winter kayaking, but then the idea is not to have your legs dangling in the water that much. anyone tried anything like this under breathable waders in the winter for tubing? or will my first excursion in the tube be a double first?
