One other thing to remember, don't let the line go from the 'haul' hand till the loop is unfurling in front of you. You will feel the line trying to pull from your hand, that is the time to let go. Aim above the horizon too, not the water in front of you.

I think it is important to emphasise that hauling is not just about distance. Nor should it be seen as a technique purely for stillwaters.
It is invaluable in turning over a leader into any sort of a headwind, whether on a river or on a loch.
It also means you can continue to use a light outfit in the wind rather than using a more powerful rod. So you don't end up knackered. Also your line hand is sharing the work with the rod hand. This again saves the wrist of the rod hand.

I was using a #5 outfit in a force 7 howler a few weeks ago. Until I learned to haul, I think I would have been struggling.

Don't think a haul is for the forward cast only, it's also handy if you haul into a wind at your back, it helps prevent the backcast looking like bunch of spaghetti. If your backcast is s***e then you have to really work for a good forward cast.

p.s. Don't think 'haul' means a he-man full arm length heave, it can be as little as a couple of inches. :wink: .

Some folks can read Charles Jardine every month perhaps and understand what he's on about.  

Hmmm……..I would love to meet this mythical person. An evening  with him in the pub much be a life changing experience. I just do not believe casting can be taught in print. I never read these articles now and believe the magazine would be better using the space for fishing articles.

Absolutely Peter. I double haul all the time. It is much tidier to make two wee hauls than one big one on the forward cast. The most common fault I have seen on my travels is that a lot of people are hauling on the back cast only and not getting the line hand back into position to haul properly on the forward cast.

Have a look at Jim Gunderson (who?) casting 120 feet.  It does show the haul kinda well I think.
