I learned tying flees from scratch at a club named after Bert Sharpe.
Davie McPhail's video is pretty much how I was shown with one difference, the body, rather than stripped peacock, is about three strands of peasant tail and some fine gold wire wound in a counter direction for binding. This thickens up the body of what is a large natural and I like the colour of the pheasant.
This March Brown spider is one of only two flies I still use from the tying club days over 30 years ago. I find it very effective, problem for some might be seeing the thing. Others will have equally effective patterns. After all, it's a Spring fly. Trout should not be too fussy. Should they :)
