Title: Hare's Face Midge
Post by: scotfly on August 06, 2007, 12:53:16 AM
This is the Hare?s Face Midge, an excellent dry fly on running and Stillwater. Fish when midges are about or use as a general dry fly or when you?re not sure what the fish are taking.

Instructions assume right-handed tyers

HOOK ? Kamasan B170 #14
THREAD ? Yellow 8/0
TAG ? Glo-Brite Floss #4 Red
RIB ? Gold Wire
BODY ? Hare?s Mask Dubbed
WING ? White CDC
HACKLE ? Furnace Cock

STEP 1
Using the floss as a thread, attach it at the point shown, wrap down a little round the bend and back to the tie in point

Then throw on a half hitch and detach.

STEP 2
Attach the tying thread and wrap it over the end of the floss

STEP 3
Take a couple of more wraps over the floss caching in the rib as you go. Then apply a pinch of dubbing to the thread

STEP 4
Wrap the dubbed thread to form the body

STEP 5
           Wrap the rib

STEP 6
Tie in two CDC feathers for the wing.

Then trim the waste and cut the wing to length

STEP 7
Tie in the hackle. If you don?t have a furnace hackle Red Game will do fine.

Then wrap the hackle

STEP 8
Trim the waste, form a neat head and varnish for the completed fly.

You can trim the hackles beneath the hook to make it sit flush in the surface film.

nice one scotfly, like the idea of using the floss as the tying silk to form the tag.
