I picked up a copy of "An Angler's Entomology" by J.R. Harris for a few quid on ebay. Still just working my way through it but it seems pretty good

Gogs, is this for 'angling' entomology? If so, I'd agree that Matching the Hatch is as good as you're likely to need. For general UK entomology for field work, the Collins Field Guide for insects is pretty good. I've got 2 issues of that and use them both regularly. Beetles and Moths both require specialist books for more detailed work.

The Amateur Entomology Society is worth investigating and their journal is very informative (although it's been some time since I subscribed). www.amentsoc.org

Just in case there's any confusion on general flick-through insect books: there were formerly two Collins guides written by Michael Chinery -

Collins Field Guide : Insects of Britain and Northern Europe
and the

Collins Pocket Guide to the Insects of Britain and Western Europe

The latter (the pocket guide) is by far the more heavily illustrated book, and the paintings are of a consistently higher quality (some of the plates in "the field guide" are of a very poor standard) - for the casual reader it is much the better of the two.

It has appeared in many guises and from more than one publisher. The current incarnation is  not published by Collins, and is now known as the Domino Guide. Here  it is ( with examples of a couple of the plates):

Goddards Waterside Guide has been useful for me and its small enough that you could take it fishing with you if you wanted.

   Received my " MATCHING THE MATCH" this morning and have just settled doon with a hoose dram o' macallan and
    my new read, my wife tells me men have got it easy! thats after running school fitba team at 8.30am, home at
