This is another Bob Wyatt pattern, the Deer Hair Sedge. Like the Dirty Duster that I did recently, another simple pattern to tie, but again its simplicity belies its effectiveness.
Bob lists several colour variations in his excellent book ?Trout Hunting,? this is I think his favourite.
Instructions assume right-handed tyers.
HOOK ? Kamasan B400 #14
THREAD ? Black Danvilles 6/0
BODY ? Seals Fur (70% Black and 30% Dark Claret, blended)
WING/HEAD ? Coastal Deer Hair.
STEP 1
Attach the thread and wrap to the hook bend, keeping the tag-end intact.

STEP 2
Apply the dubbing and wrap to form the body.

STEP 3
Wrap the tag-end of thread to rib the body.

STEP 4
Prepare, measure, cut and tie in the wing. If you?re unsure of how to prepare the wing see HERE (http://www.wildfisher.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=4866.0)

STEP 5
Whipfinish and detach the thread.

A drop of varnish and the fly is complete.

Thanks Dennis. A great fly, easy to tie and very effective.
Have added it to the index
A great fly, i wish mine looked that neat!
I've been tying them lately with a spikey dubbed Mcflylon body for extra floatability.
cheers
Paul
...and try a version with a tinsel rib

if they don't take the plain claret DHS they will take the this

An absolute modern classic - maybe the best all-round highland loch fly?
I'd recommend tying some with as thick a wing as you can for tweaking/figure-of-eighting in a big wave.
And Bob's advice to use a bright green body in sunny weather is definitely on the money.
