Was thinking about this. We once lead the world in freshwater game fishing. What is the greatest Scottish fishing invention - tackle or technique?
It can't be Loch Style fly fishing, that was also Irish. For me it has to be the Spey Cast - the name says it all. It took over the fly fishing world.
What do you think?
Is poaching a Scottish invention Fred?, or guddling troots? seen lots of old paintings of kilt wearing lads with spears and a burning torch after Salmon. I think whumper catching and Wupert baiting are also Scots inventions too.........................................

The Borthwick scale of weights and measures.
That's up there with the achievements of Sir Isaac Newton :D
Peter Ross - now that's interesting - there are many similar, not least the Ronald, and of course must mention the Mairi, 2 of Niall Campbells' inventions, while he was working at Faskally examining the stomach contents of trout from Loch Moraig, above Blair Atholl..
Stewart's Black Spider and other hackled trout flies.
