HELP PLEASE THANKS
Hi Stuart,
I use something simillar to the first one - with the side leaver - a regent type vice. I like them a lot. A lot more than many more expensive vices, they are simple to use and grip hooks from 24 - 6/0. I can't see past them but others can...
Norm
The "C" clamp version of the first one.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rotatable-Lever-Action-Fly-Tying-Vice-Brand-New_W0QQitemZ180417409557QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL?hash=item2a01b73215
I had one of these and tied 1000's of flies on it with no problems.
I'd go for Number 1, the other two are cam locking and I personally don't like cheap cam locking vices...Dyna King yes.... but cheap no, the cams just don't last as they are quite soft. The lever ones will eventually lose grip but not till you've blasted out heaps n heaps of flies.
Thanks guys that's great i'll get myself one.
Can't get a clamp one though as the dining room table is too thick for it I think.
I'm sure this will be the first of many fly tyeing expenses
Cheers
Stuart
Number 1 looks similar to the vice I use... nothing fancy, but it holds the flies ok and should do you fine. Mine has the heavy base too and I find it ok.
Aye no.1 Stu, almost identical to the one i use
cheers
Paul

Must admit I much prefer a base to my vice. I've tied in too many situation where i couldn't or shouldn't(wifes best table ) get a clamp ontu a table either because of depth but as often because the clamp cant catch because of ogee or similkar decorative edging.

Me too, far more versatile. I was reluctant to try it, but would not go back to a clamp vice now.
Thanks chaps "buy it now"...done :D
That'll be the only outlay for fly tying then, basically now I just raid old womens sewing baskets, pick up road kill and hey presto :? :D
Did you raid old women's boxes for the ginger minge nymph?!
I would have thought the fly would have been more of a "grey hen & rusty"

Good for you you will never regret it! Fly tying will help make you a more successful fly fisherman.
Congrats on stopping smoking, that is something else you will never regret. I did the same thing 30 years ago. As an added incentive remember that for the cost of 20 fags a day you can have a months fishing, in New Zealand - all inclusive ....................

Paul - A beautifully constructed post on a topic that you seem to be very knowledgeable on, speaking from personal experience :? :D

Congrats on stopping smoking,
Yeah I look forward to hours in from of the vice, especially for the river flies which I find harder to get in shops and overdresed when you do.
As for the smoking, I hope you wont see me puffing away at Drummond next year ....i'm on and off the damn things like a switch, "weak" the missus says!. Still determined to do it for the family, me and the money.....Hmm New Zealand you say :D
