Hi im looking to downsize my rod i curently use a 7 weight redfly but as im just starting to fish for wild broonies found it to be a bit overkill. I know they say try a few rods out to see what feels right but im not that confident in my casting. i was just wanting some info on what the forum members thought was a good choice of rod in this weight class.

Cheers

Hi Andy

I got one of these last year when on a tight budget (?40.00 ) it was the first #5 I picked up so had nothing to compare it too, i've had no problems with it and casts fine. Would leave you extra cash for a decent line !

I'm sure if I used a Sage for a day I would find issues with the above rod, but I kep away from expensive toys.

I don't know anything about this company but March Brown make superb travel rods, I tried one of them this week (I think someone on this forum has one). You can stick these in even a small rucksack.

Vision usually make decent rods at that sort of budget as do TFO or maybe even a Bloke.

You could try the Greys GRXI - I recently got the 9ft #5/6 only ?95 - they also do an 8'6" #4/5 for about the same money.

Great rods at a good price.

You could also try the Sharpes Gordon 2 - Not tried them myself but I know Clan Chief has one and would be able to advise on cost etc

I have a seven weight Sharpes Gordon 2. I mostly use it for SWFF and Seatrout/Salmon fishing. It's a nice rod but I'm not sure what It would be like as a #5. It cost me ?250 from GAC with a reel, spare spool and sinking and floating line. The #5 should be cheaper.

The other rod that I have for loch fishing and on smaller rivers is my #5 8ft 6" Cortland 6 piece. This is a wonderful little rod. It feels amazing fishing with it after using my big rod, fits away very neat and is just generally a good wee rod. My dad bought it for me but I think it was about ?80-?100.
