Same player on both old laptop and netbook, so not sure if its this  :roll:
MSE is now running on old laptop and I did remove AVG before installing.
I think it used to stream ok before AVG safe search was installed but to be honest with being away at work and other things I'm not sure when it stopped working.

Check that the buffer settings in the player are the same or better ( bigger buffer if necessary). Surprisingly enough some stuff that runs well on older machines may not run so well on newer hardware. As I wrote, there can be lots of reasons for this behaviour.

Not easily, it depends on the protocol that station is using and whether you can access the settings. Also many web based setups use special players that you can't influence at all, either they work or they don't, since you have no control or information you can't do much about it.

It wont run at all on my machine for instance, just says "initialising" and never does anything except for the initial announcement that it is "the North's number one".

there are no settings but it might be possible to alter browser settings to increase buffering.

Try another;

http://www.shoutcast.com/radio/UK

http://www.radiosure.com/downloadz/downloadz-select/

there are loads of them.

you can also get a free player that will play various streams;

http://www.ilovefreesoftware.com/21/featured/5-best-free-desktop-internet-radio-players.html

I would go for that rather than mess about.

There are lots of ways to do it. A desktop player is usually better because you can control it.

You can use stuff like iTunes as well;

http://www.apple.com/itunes/

I used this on Windows for a long time, very good, and is now free;

http://spider-player.com/

One major advantage of a desktop player is that it is independent of your browser there are other advantages as well.

If you have a media player installed it may have a radio option, like this;

http://www.wikihow.com/Use-VLC-Media-Player-to-Listen-to-Internet-Radio

If you use your laptops mainly for entertainment you can use this;

http://xbmc.org/download/

This is a complete entertainment centre with loads of options.

All that is free.

Hi Mike
Thanks for the help, the reason it didnt play on your machine  could be one of the following, when you start it, there is an advertisement, after some time up to a couple of minutes it then plays the radio, sometimes there is an advertisement and sometimes not, start it up and let it run for 5mins !
Also if I was working out of the UK, for example Norway it wouldnt play either?
My problem is that the netbook will stream but some what older laptop though more power computing power wont  :roll:

PS a good radio station if you want weather or road updates for the highlands if planning a trip north

Allan

The reason it wont play on my machine is that it tries to shove cookies I don't want, it tracks usage, and it sends advertisements. All such activities are blocked on my machine.

Any of those I suggested will work a lot better, don't send shite, and are easily controlled.

If you want specific radio stations you have to search for them and enter the stream.

Here is an example;

This is "Irish Pub Radio"  http://www.irishpubradio.com/

if you want to play that in a desktop player  ( as opposed to playing it through your browser) you need to enter the stream address, which in that case is

http://176.31.240.114:8326

to get various stream addresses you can either look them up in various online directories;

http://www.shoutcast.com/

http://www.pandora.com/

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radioscotland/

or often the radio station itself will give the address on its website, or the equivalent for the player you are using. Click on the icon for your player, this stores the stream in your desktop player and you can simply go to it whenever you like.

http://www.internet-radio.com/

http://www.live365.com/web/components/content/downloads/desktop.live

some players have radio searches built in, or at least limited channel options.

There are very many ways to do it. A good desktop player is the best option.

Thanks again Mike, maybe my firewall or anti virus blocks the advertisements, sometimes I get them sometimes I dont. But anyway I can use a program like windows media player to stream the same station is what your point is ? Sounds like an good idea and alternative so I'll try this when I have some time.

My pleasure.  There are lots of reasons some things are blocked, or don't work well.

Yes, possibly, with Windows Media Player for instance;

http://www.windowsmedia.com/radioui/home.aspx

search for stations;  http://www.windowsmedia.com/radioui/Search.aspx

this depends on the station sending a protocol that works.  Some local groups and stations use protocols that don't work under certain circumstance, or not very well, and quite a few stations only work locally. Also, not all stations stream to the Internet anyway, some just use radio.

It may be possible to get the station you posted working properly, but to do that I need more information.  I could then possibly alter your browser buffers. That station is part of an advertising combine;

http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/

you can search for the individual stations, but that is no guarantee they will work. Here is one of them;

http://www.tayam.co.uk/

Here is another;

http://www.radioborders.com/news/entertainment/

Neither work on my machine, and there is no direct feed I can find although they do sell apps;

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/radio-borders/id377900461?mt=8

Personally I would avoid them because of this;

http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/privacy

That by the way is the main reason the station wont work for me, it tries to collect personal data, and my machine is set up specifically to prevent that.
