Title: Book on River Birds
Post by: shanksi on May 19, 2008, 09:04:02 PM
I know I'm leaving myself wide open here for all sorts of comments but here goes
As Josh and I are pretty new to river fishing was looking for some suggestions for books for beginners on the birds we are likely to see fishing the White Cart.  Trying to keep his interest going when fishing for 5 or 6 hours can be a struggle and thought if we started to identify some of the birds we saw might help him.

Aye gee him a few years and he'll be wanting  a book about birds that he'll meet in pubs etc :D

I think the RSPB Pocket Birds book is a good bet, it's by Jonathan Elphick & John woodward, covers all birds in the UK so not restricted to rivers but very comprehensive and easy to use, with good clear photos.

Hi Shanksi,

There aren't many guide exclusively for water birds.Harpo's RSPB book is a good shout, and also the Collins Gem guides are pretty good:

Really handy to take with you for on the spot identification, and not too complicated for kids to use.

Cheers
