Title: Arthur Ransome Rod and Line DVD
Post by: Wildfisher on July 13, 2012, 03:38:38 PM
Have been buying quite a few fishing DVDs recently. There are some good bargains to be had if you look around.

Got a nice one with the late Sir Michael Hordern  fishing and narrating from Arthur Ransome's  "Rod and Line"

This was a TV series in the late 70s or early 80s as I remember and what a refreshing change from much of the dull, hyped stuff, casting, fish porn etc   on offer these days.

No tomorrow's-essential-space-age-boron-magnesium-ringed-narrow-loop-guaranteed-lightening fast-rods, no   multi-compound-tapered-Sage-Orvis-logo-breathable-baseball caps, no screaming rock music, no look how far I can cast and therefore how big my dick must be.

No, just 3 hours with an educated and cultured gentleman with his split cane rods, tweed jacket, collar and tie, fishing and talking over a  musical sound track of piano, cello and violin.

Wonderful! Fishing portrayed in the very way that got me fishing in the first place.

What a tonic compared to some of the hyped up garbage on offer these days.   Really! Best fiver I ever spent!

I remember that one. Good film.

I read the book when I was young. Definitely in my top ten fishing books.

The writing is superb Alex.

Carp fishing is described as "an endless quest for an unholy grail". A bit more insightful that "wooooooooo! nice fish dude"

That's exactly the kind of rubbish I mean Alan. Hardly contemplative. All that shows is that probably very  little  thought or planning went into the writing and scripting  assuming there was any at all of course. A bit like a movie where special effects  are used as a substitute for lack of a plot. Or writing a book for the sake of of it or for ego rather than for the need of it.

.......... on the other hand and in complete contrast  ....... another from my latest batch ..............

WILD FISHING WITH HENRY GILBEY vol II - 2 DVD set.

Sea fishing and oh how I wish it was just a 1 DVD set.     Loud, brash, in your face - in fact it encompasses just about everything that fishing shouldn't. The guy is a good angler, but  oh dear .....................

That said it does have some interesting bits about mullet fishing. All in all this DVD might  be more suited to your insecure / inflated ego  ex soccer casual type  angler.

Anyone  know one?

I have to confess I had not realised he had written a book about fishing, but a quick google reveals just what a highly regarded book it is.

As a child I was enchanted by his Swallows & Amazon series and I have read some of his writings from his time as a foreign correspondant with the Manchester Guardian; so I am now really keen to read it

Sadly it doesn't appear to be in print at the moment, but I have just purchased a secondhand copy on Amazon for 1p plus the standard P&P rate.

So that one book sorted for the holidays  :D

If Sir Michael Hordern's    film is anything to go by the writing in Arthur Ransome's  "Rod and Line"  should be superb and well worth buying.

I've got that book somewhere but it's not one I've re-read many times like some others.

I met Michael Hordern in the 80s but I didn't know who he was until months later, when I saw him on some television programme. I was cycling, rod tied to the crossbar, to the river from a friends house in Great Durnford (Wiltshire) and the river flows quite close to the road at one point and this older gentleman was struggling to extricate his fly from a tree. I got the fly off the tree for him and we stayed nattering for ages before I headed off to my part of the river.
