I use a Leki walking pole with a lanyard tied to the handle. Compact and very lightweight. I have a "proper" wading staff that I never use now.

Made one once from birch and antler, it sat in the garage for about 5 years so I gave it to a gamekeeping friend of mine to use out stalking as he had a bad habit of losing them.

Better used even if it was for a wee while than it catching dust in the garage.

Was a simple construction held together by a double threaded bold and Gorilla glue.

Wrapped some paracord at the handle joint down about 6 inches and tied off on a loop to act as a lanyard.

Paracord is a handy thing to have to hand, even in small sections.

I gave the handle a scrub and a few coats of polyurethane varnish, to smooth it more than anything else, a wee metal cover (like a bottle cap) on the bottom, didn't do any finishing on the birch as I liked the rugged look my grandfather might have had.
