A major clean up under way after the river Don was hit by an oil spill. An investigation is underway after a three mile oil spill on the river Don which is affecting much of the ADAA's waters on the lower river. The cause of the slick which was initially spotted by helicopter pilots has been traced to a business in Pitmedden  industrial estate where a leaking tank was identified as the specific cause. The situation is currently being monitored by SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) who are also accessing the potential effects on wildlife.

Booms have been placed in the river to form a barrier while the tank has been drained and a cleanup performed. It is understood from SEPA yesterday that this problem is far more serious than originally thought and there is a major land contamination issue in the vicinity of the tank which leaked. It is so serious that major excavation work will be required to assess the extent of the contamination. Until this has been done and the contaminated land removed there will be an ongoing risk of further pollution should we get heavy rainfall.

Oil retaining booms have been installed inside manholes leading to the river but heavy rainfall would overcome these, so members need to be aware that possibly we have not seen the end of the current problem.

As of 4.00pm 13 October the position is "there still is a little amount of oil trickling out of the discharge pipe. The booms are working well but a lot of oil has again appeared in the collection manhole and Scottish Water are bringing in a tanker tomorrow to pump out the oil being contained behind the boom."

Regular updates are being placed on the ADAA Forum

It's not good and although some ADAA guys are saying the fish do not seem to be affected at this stage it's pretty vile and certainly not good for the other wildlife including birds and otters.  The river is pretty low right now too.

Sad news for sure and way too common.  Hopefully the damage will be minimum and the cuplrits will be appropriately chastised.  :(

I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm pretty sure if the penalties outweighed  the savings of not doing things properly  these kind of  incidents would be fewer.
