Title: Paul Young - Hooked On Fishing DVDs
Post by: Wildfisher on July 16, 2012, 07:47:42 PM
Got this boxed set of 3 at a bargain price. There is one DVD on Scotland, one on England, one on Ireland

Watched the Scottish one.  Holy ****,  with the vast scope of  real fishing available in Scotland who on earth wants to fish for domesticated, 1/2 tame  stockies, browns  or rainbows, far less make a DVD about it?   There is one decent episode, trolling for salmon and pike. The rest is rubbish imo. What a shame, really. I like Paul Young and the films are well produced, professionally shot, but the  content is suitable only for those who  love stockie bashing.

If you enjoy real fishing don't waste your money on that one.

I'll report on the other two DVDs once I have viewed them.

Paul Young is good to watch Andy. To see him fishing for rank stockies in a place that offers as much as Scotland does is poor show. There is no excuse for it. A stockie - rainbow  or brown -  is always a stockie, no matter how "bonny" it is or how long it has been in the water. It's still a stockie. At best second rate, if even that. Not real fishing, anyone who believes it is,  is delusional. To promote that as Scottish fishing is poor show.  Scotland has so much more to offer. The episode where he trolling for salmon on Awe and pike in N.I. is so good in comparison.

I loved the early episodes especially the trolling ones with Aya and Ron great tv i used to tape them all and watch them over and over.I suppose he had to include stockie bashing because like it or not its part of fishing in scotland. No matter how shit it is.

I like PY...but!

The episode where he showed us how to use a tube....on Swanswater! Or fishing for "land-locked"salmon in Englandshire?

He has had the opportunity to fish some great places, he fished the same stretch of a river On Vancouver Island with the same guide as me, and I like him as a presenter but he has sold his sole  too often.

Well seeing he knows his place and does not come on this forum.

That's true Fergie, but there are 4 episodes on the DVD and 3 of the 4 are stockie bashing. That's pretty poor really, but possibly reflects the way fishing has become dumbed-down even in Scotland where there is so much scope for real fishing.

Or, like in here, he tends to keep the wild fishing away from public viewing  :8)

Get off his back, he went where the producers sent him. They, in turn, are driven by viewing figures or advertising revenue.
I met him at a charity event we were running in Paisley Cathedral, there was a reception for the celebrities afterwards and I spoke with him for a hour or more. His knowledge and experience of the wild and remote areas of Scotland was only exceeded by his enthusiasm for them. He correctly remembered the names of pools and features of my local waters and expressed a wish to return. This was confounded by his filming schedule - "Patagonian Trout next month", its a tough job etc.
To be paid enough to fish wherever I wanted, for fishing for whatever and wherever in the world they wanted, would suit me fine- stockies included.

Honest your honour, I was only following the orders of my superiors. It's their fault really, I just took the money.

Have since watched the English DVD, well most of it until I could take no more and pressed eject. 100% rainbow fishing.  No great surprise there. Unlike in Scotland it's what's available to the masses.

Only the Irish one to go now. Let's hope it's better so far it's been abysmal stuff and a complete waste of money. Thank goodness for Arthur Ransome and Sir Michael Hordern.

Sandy, no  one in their right mind is going to broadcast details of their  "special" places on TV.  However their  are 1001 locations, club and association waters etc  that represent what real Scottish fishing  is about far  better than does stockie bashing at Kingennie, a couple of reservoirs in Glen Devon and Loch Fad in Bute.

Ah! Isn't that where the target audience, i.e. the majority of Central belt anglers, fish? I know loads of guys who fish these places regularly and seldom fish for brown trout never mind hill lochs :) There are a few who do both so they will buy the videos too. The only ones to find the whole lot unappealing would be the dyed in the wool wild fisher and there are very few of those, even in here.

I don't know who the target audience is, but I would guess  UK fishermen in general?  In any case, the DVD is entitled Hooked on Fishing Scotland, not Hooked on Fishing Central Belt Stockie Bashing.

I found the Scottish  DVD, apart from the trolling episode,  very tedious. Others after viewing it may disagree, but I guess that what opinions and reviews are about.

Are they the ones that are on youtube, as  most of them are pretty good Fred and all full length
Hooked with Paul Young - Cape Wrath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_8KLTgQqH0#)    for example.
But I know what you mean about stockie bashing, why would you with all that nice water and scenery to go at

Like most of us I saw lots of good Paul Young programmes back in  the 90s Jim, including the one at  Cape Wrath.  In fact I bought these DVDs on the strength of  that.  Paul Young always comes across well, he is a trained actor, so he should do. The content of the programmes on this DVD are not of the same standard.

So don't watch them anymore Fred (please!). Having fished with Paul Young I share the other comments on his appreciation, knowledge and sincerity about fishing and Scotland. So you may not agree or appreciate the content of these particular production but others will and each to their own

Yes Colin to each his own for sure and to each his own opinion!

I have just watched the Irish DVD. Completely different. Fly fishing for trout, pike, pollock and bream fishing. Not a pellet pig in sight.

Now if I were, let's say, an American angler planning a visit to the British Isles and wondering where to fish I might watch these DVDs.

Then I'd head for Ireland.

A very poor advert for Scotland imo.

I have to agree, I have not seen the videos but I have seen every episode of Hooked on Scotland, Fishing, Road Trip etc at some point. If you have the Discovery channels on TV you will know what I mean.
His programmes are repeated along with the other  usual suspects time & time again on that channel.
I often remark how young (pun excuse) he looks in his earlier ones in fact he often appears in the old Rod & Line magazine a youthfull chap then.
At the time they were "good" to watch because quite simply there was not much more at the time. He has an infectious personality & came over very well no doubt being the trained actor he is helps immensely. Having said that Robson Green is a trained actor
Worst one I saw was the one where he fished a winter Fitty with a coarse rod for Rainbows oh & the Killern Fishery one was dire as well. The Fad one was on only this week. His later offerings on "The Road trip" series were far far better.
He still crops up on TV, I remember a Still Game episode where he plays an old man, hell he (Shug The Lug ) is an old man.
You can not blame the producer well you can because the producer is a fisherman & the production team comprises Paul Young as part of that team.
What is it Fair Line Productions something like that?
PS That time the rod was pulled out his hand into the river was a classic.

Fred having not seen the dvds you have,  I think I will stick to watching the old ones on youtube, for me, even though I live in a nice part of England, I still hanker after the hills of the north with the hill lochs, fantastic rivers and beautiful mountains, if I want to fish, most of the rivers and  lakes around here are stocked at some level which is a crying shame but is the norm, the Wharfe where I fish most has a good head of wild fish which is what I choose to target. But could never understand why you would want to fish for stockies in Scotland unless you don't know any better! Maybe Paul Young and whoever else is making fishing tv is missing an oppurtunity to point the younger end in the right direction, like the Jack Hargreaves or Arthur Ransomes or Bernard Venables of our generation did for us, as has been discussed on here before. Ok I'll take my rose tinted glasses off now, but it would be nice, even if they made those sort of programes for us!

The Irish DVD is great, for example catching a stunning 5lb wild brown on Lough Sheelin on dry  fly.  Then on the Scottish one an entire programme is given over to catching hideous pellet pigs at Kingennie trout fishery near Dundee,   another is catching rainbows on two dams in Glen  Devon and another stockie bashing on Loch Fad.

Scotland has at least as much to offer as Ireland, but you'd never know that from watching this.  If an Englishman had made a film like  that about fishing in Scotland he'd be driven back over the border in  a torrent of expletives.

Forbes of Kingennie? I have been offered a days fishing there by a supplier, breakfast followed by a mornings fishing then lunch and an afternoons fishing and finished off with supper.
Want to take my place Fred as I think I might be busy that day  They have prizes for biggest fish, heaviest bag and most fish caught, might be right up your street :tongue2

Tempting as that generous offer is Daz I must respectfully decline. Somehow I doubt that in real life Paul Young would fish there.

I heard that. The winner gets a free day ticket, the runner up gets a free weekly ticket and third place  gets a free season ticket.

I would recommend the day at Kingennie.

It has a well stocked shop and the people running it know what they are selling. Also the restaurant serves some really nice food. You could probably spend a decent day there without fishing.

They used to have a good looking course pool but I think that is now where "the big fish" live!

I believe they have built another 100 houses and a golf course since the last time I was there so it should be very busy, and there might even be a wedding on. Sounds like a day not to be missed.

That was a classic!
I'd like to see some of the earlier ones, I think they were made by STV?
I remember one where he was on south Uist, fishing Roag, Grogarry and Bee

I like PY, much less grating than some self-styled experts.
Considering how many programs he's made, I'd say the hit rate is pretty high. For every stockie bash or tedious bream-fishing sop, there's a thrilling encounter with huge sea trout, or dorado, or giant Alaskan salmon.
He's been everywhere, done it and made a film of it too. Good luck to him.
Oh and he has filmed some great stuff in Scotland - a whumper off Caladail and a 20lber on the Spey spring to mind

Edit; I'm guessing the compilers of these DVDs didn't give a shit about trifles like quality of content

Indeed he has Dave. What a shame they didn't put some of it on these DVDs.
