Wild Cherry?

Out for a cast this evening and came accross these fellas hanging over a favourite glide:

I am hazarding a guess ...... wild cherries??

If so are they worth nipping back to harvest tomorrow?

If not ....... any suggestions?

Well as they are pretty safe from humans (wrong side of nasty deep riffle) ..... I will leave them for a few days more!

Yup, wild cherry or  "gean" as they are also known. They are very common up here in Aberdrear-shire, our modest 2 acres is covered in them and they self-seed everywhere. Monika once made wine with them. It was fabulous but far too much work involved gathering enough fruit and stoning it.

Mmmm ..... wild cherry wine sounds absolutely superb.

Huge fan of fruit wines, preferably homemade but these days I cannot help but enjoy a bottle of Cairn O'Mohr fine selection ...... particularly the superb Rhubarb and Elderberry versions). One day, when time is on my side, I am going to have a crack at traditional fruit wine making!

why do you have to de-stone cherrys to make the wine-- ? --you normally just dump all the fermented crap at the bottom of the bucket stones and all ,, im not an expert but have dabbled in it years ago 

well made it in 5 gallon batches ,,rice/raisin .. bananas, apples, elderberry etc ,,,I was made to give it up
women just dont understand you have to sample it

One word of warning though, you get two types true wild cherries which I think they are

OR

Ornamental cherry trees, which are the most bitter things you will ever taste

Only one way to find out i'm afraid and try one !

you can also make Cherry Brandy :gay4/Vodka with them also works well with Brambles

Had a nice walk today. Wild Strawberries and wild Raspberries, the wild Cherries are gone though there might still be some left in the town. They planted them everywhere here at one time or another, you get some funny looks from passersby standing on the pavement picking and eating them, the really dark red ones taste the best. The brambles aren't far away from being ripe. Didn't need much lunch today

Went Cherry picking today ended up with about 2 Lb of them, both dark red and light red from the same trees. Both were sweet and very nice. I ignored the looks from the passengers of the cars and buses that passed
