Breac, you are right about wear and tear on the old joints. Using modern, light weight,  rods is a delight. I did not realise how good they were  until I went back to my old Tru-Fly!  Best hung up on the pub wall for decoration.

This practice comes from fisheries. Stocked rainbows seem immune to false / bad casting – or at least less spooked than wild fish. Took one of my son's pals fishing to Loch Laidon and  to Assynt. He had learned  at the local fisheries and caught loads of rainbows. He caught no wild trout  at all on Laidon and up in Assynt he only started to catch once I had sussed out he was spooking the fish  with his exuberant false casting. I stopped him doing it and hey presto.
