Title: which i-pad?
Post by: corsican dave on December 26, 2014, 08:12:43 AM
okay folks, I have been tasked by my mother (a non pc-literate 79 yr-old) to buy her an I-pad. she's been using one at a club she attends. problem: I know dick about I-pads and there's new models on the market all the time. my thinking is for the most basic, if such a thing exists. she's not going to be streaming movies or playing games! she will be sending e-mails, reading kindle books, shopping and hopefully not being ripped off by mr kdogo from Nigeria or any other "very nice" men.

before you all start advising that she doesn't need an I-pad, i'd just like to add that you don't know my mother..... and she really needs an apple I-pad, if you get my drift

thanks in advance  :8)

My wife swears by the Kindle Fire HD. I note they are coming down in price. Might be worthwhile looking at.

I don't buy Apple products on principle and never have. Both my phone and tablet  are Samsung and they work fine. Interestingly the touch screens on Apple devices are designed and made by Samsung.

iPads are great and easy to use, but dearer than the likes of a kindle or a Samsung tablet etc but for someone not too familiar with technology they are by far the most user friendly and simple. The aftercare is also the best iv come across on anything, if there's a problem with it they fix it there and then and if it's not straightforward they will replace it. I buggered my iPhone using it in the rain, apple gave me a new one. I dropped another one and smashed the screen, apple replaced that because it was under warranty?? Didn't argue :)
I've got an iPad about 3 years old and just had a shot of my brothers brand new iPad Air (I think that's what it's called  :?) and to be honest the difference is minimal, clearer screen maybe and no doubt the processor is nanoseconds faster but for  everyday user like your mum I don't think there would be much difference. I would advise just finding the cheapest version available and going for that. I think apple might even sell reconditioned ones if you are looking for a bargain.

Just read that post Fred, what principle?

Their products are overpriced and they are too ready resort to court action for even the most trivial reasons. Fortunately  most times they lose. Had they won in the 1980s there would be no Microsoft Windows, computing would have been put back decades and exclusive to those with shed loads of money.

Fair enough, don't know anything about their business practise but I'm sure it bares a fair resemblance to most large multinationals, I do know they have the best customer service out there and their products are the best, thats why they are more expensive, people with always pay for quality and assurance

If that's what you believe that's fair enough, that's what they want. At least you have a choice. Had it been up to Apple you wouldn't have.

iPhones are iPads are apparently designed to just last 12 months luckily this one is 2 and a half years now. Really they should be building things to last and stop coming out with a new item number just because they made the screen bigger, smaller brighter torch etc.

It's not what I believe. Big companies fighting it out amongst themselves doesn't really bother me, they're all self interested. You'd struggle to find one that's not capable of bullying, court orders, shady dealing, questionable staffing policy and employing any means possible to maximise profit and market share.
I've used Samsung, Sony and many other products over the years but now I use apple because they are better and easier to use and offer the best aftercare

Think Nike trainers. Same strategy.

Dave, better to get her what she is used to, however, my sister just bought my mum a new smart phone. Android OS, essentially the same OS that is on Android tablets. Once she was shown how to use it she managed no problem.  My mum is 86.

  Like them or loath them, it's a fact of history that Microsoft helped make computing available to the masses.

I'm with Fred would not touch an Apple product with a barge pole.  Unless it was a nice cider :makefun

Dave

I would go for the 32 rather that a 16 or 64. The 32 will allow for more storage if she decides to start taking photos with it. The 16 is just a bit light on space but the 64 would probably be overkill. I started my wife with the 16 and had to upgrade it to a 32 within four months as she started to use it to its potential. She had never used a computer before in her life, didn't even know hoe to turn any of mine on . She now works between the iPad, a Samsung Tablet and Samsung smart phone and that in only three years :)

With a Samsung Android device you can upgrade memory for under a tenner simply by plugging in a micro SD card. My phone is 32MB, my tablet 64MB.  Try doing that with an Apple device, Steve Jobs made sure you can't even change the f*****g battery! .

I know, but if it is an iPad she wants then those considerations become immaterial. With the iPad, Facetime to any other Apple device means that keeping in touch is a much better experience rather than having to download and use Skype which she can also use to speak to and see on any other device if needed. Everything is a compromise and a personal preference. I would still be using the AmigaOS if they had managed to get the money for development and marketing that would have kept them up in the market beside Microsoft. It is still available and under development but is more a niche/enthusiast OS now. Even the NASA super computers used to run on AmigaOS because of its small kernel size and multitasking capabilities :)

I'd go for a 16GB iPad Air if you are buying new.

If your mother wants to use it away from home you might have to use a cellular version with all the hassle that entails. If I use mine away from home I just "find" a free internet provider. I don't keep "private" details on mine so I don't need to worry too much about security. If she's only going to use it as a computer at home there is no issue.

32GB only if she's really going to go to town.

You can get refurbished ones from the Apple website.

I understand Fred's issues with Apple but then big business is all about maintaining as big a monopoly as you can get away with. My iMac has been the most reliable computer I've ever had and the I kept wishing the one I had at work would break down so I could have a fancy new model - but after eight years it was still going strong.

I thought that when I bought my wife her first one and she outgrew it in four months. Having it 24/7 is a lot different from getting a shot now and again :)

What hassle with the cellular one? The second one I got for my wife has mobile and the contract is with Vodafone for £5 per month and works fine, assuming a signal :)

If you already have a smart phone you don't need to buy a cellular tablet. Get a hotspot app for your phone - free or pennies - then connect to it from your tablet. Don't know  if that's possible with Apple, but it's a snip with Android devices.

I can't remember if it works with the iPad through the Android phone but it works with my laptops through the phone. The iPad can be turned into a Hotspot and they can be connected through it :)

Definitely check out the reconditioned IPads often available on Apples official website. These are usually brand new items that have been returned unused by major purchasing departments. They come with all Apples usual warranties etc. For battlefield guiding purposes I had to buy a top of the range 3G model with inbuilt GPS and got one as above off Apple with a saving of about £100 if I remember correctly. Never had any problems with it.

One of the many reasons why none of our iPads have been updated yet :)
