recommendations, folks? i'm talking about taking chickens down to 20 feet or deeper in a 8-10wt. currently i'm using an old shakey glider efs, which is pretty slick; but it's not ideal with the big birds. I suppose I could experiment with lead-cored trolling line, but i'm kinda moving away from fly fishing at that point.

some would say i'm beyond that already, of course.... :8)

I use these.

Inexpensive and go down like a lead encased rock. They do all sorts of lines, worth a look in their ebay shop

Hi Dave, I use a Rio In Touch sinking 7. It's just a fairly typical Hi D line but I reckon it has a fairly weighty short head. It can carry bigger lures out quite well but If it's Pike rather than UK type saltwater flies you might want a look at the   Jim TEENY Saltwater TS 550. It's quite happy in freshwater and I'm told it is still happy in warm or cold water temps.
You will see the full spec on the Sportfish website..........

PS I've owned a Teeny fast sink tip line and the suppleness and tapers combined to make a lovely line. I've still got and it's still working beautifully.

I would have thought you'd be using a shooting head like the Salmon anglers using big Sneldas Dave.

that's great folks, thanks very much! :D :D

I think i'll go with Fred's option first. at £15 delivered & 8ips, what's not to like? however, the Teeny line is tempting. at 8ips in salt water it should be even quicker in fresh....

I see where you're coming from Burnie, but I i'm really looking at getting a fly down deep behind the canoe in glacial lochs. and if it doubles as a swff line too, so much the better!

having said that, stupidly big tube flies could be a winter project! :8)

Dave, I've been using the Airflo  Depthfinder 400 (400 grains)  - equivalent to a #10/11 which has a stated sink rate of 8.5 inches per second.
It is an integrated shooting head and casts well - better than any other shooting heads I have cast.

I find it too fast sinking for bank fishing in fresh water, but it suits some shore pollack marks and from a boat it would be just fine. It is hard to argue with Fred's cheapo option though :)

This is the Depth Finder..... http://www.airflofishing.com/Flylines_AirfloFlylineRange_Specialist_Depthfinder.cfm#Depthfinder

It's also one of the best shooting lines I have used. Heavy and with a thin running line.

The #6 weight is deadly on flooded NZ spring creeks.  :8)
