Title: Biggest expense
Post by: Clan Ford on April 12, 2009, 10:54:03 PM
While whiling away the hours on Dunalistair on Saturday, with Brian, we got to chatting about what we actually spend on fishing gear and what was our biggest expense.

For me it was waders.  I pretty much treat them as consumables   I'm lucky to get 6 months out of a set - its usually more like three - be they breathable or neoprene.  I tend to buy cheap and often.  I've tried expensive and found they didn't last any longer.  I'm sure I must have spent thousands of pounds on waders   I doubt all the rods I own would add up to half that amount, and as Brian pointed out, most have lifetime guarantees so I'm not likely to have to buy any more (but somehow i suspect I will ).

What bit of gear is your biggest expense?

I agree with you Norm.  Waders for me never last long.

I used to be able to get ex MoD divers wet suits which were past their shelf life.  Cut off at the waist they were brilliant and cheap    They never lasted long but cost very little.

That was many years ago and now, like you, I buy the cheapest cos I know they won't last long.

Have to agree on waders.....normally get 1 to 2 seasons then just bin them.

I tend to be a bit rough on them so I just buy cheap and cheerful...

Jackets been through the wax jobs that go brick hard in the cold and now lies dormant in the loft.....

Have a greys wading jacket and a really good investment.....it was free as the lad at the till made an arse of the

transaction in GAC .

Still have a wee laugh to myself every time i put the jacket on !

Not sure, possibly waders, fly lines?  It?s all pretty insignificant compared to that other essential piece of  gear without which my fishing would be massively curtailed - the car and running it!

A lovely bit of Afghan Kush  petrol to get to the venues would be my most expensive, pretty carefull with rods & waders so keeps that cost down.

Now that I've pretty much kicked my rod habit, it is probably lines. Actually that's a lie.... it is still rods, but I really really don't need any more now. I don't. No.

Fuel - not so bad now I drive a small diesel but most of my brownie trips are round trips of between 80 - 140 miles.
