Title: fishscale body tube: help please?
Post by: corsican dave on December 04, 2015, 10:08:34 PM
does anyone recognise this stuff? I inherited it from a buddy a few years ago and I don't think it's made any more. is there something similar out there?

I bought something like that last year - for my dry flies if course.

Can't remember from where. I'll go  check it for clues

cheers Fred, but the mylar tubing is a bit different. this stuff is more like braided poly-leader.

Are you thinking 'Fat Boy Mullet' Dave ? In any case there is a braid on the market called EZ Body Braid, It comes in a variety of sizes and colours including clear. It can be bought from Ozz Goldstein at www.uksaltwaterflies.com (http://www.uksaltwaterflies.com) . I recently bought two lengths of pearl in extra large (.5" diameter). it cost £5.?? for approx. 2ft. It isn't mylar tubing.
I believe the clear is very similar to the braid used for leaders.

 blimey, there must've been over 10ft on that card originally! i'll go and look around hobbycraft sometime or maybe go with Fred's idea and use the mylar. mind you, that's not cheap either.

What are you doing with it Dave? winding on the body or threading the hook through the middle ?

winding it round Colin. I might go back to using chenille or  tinsel as it's pretty cheap; I just liked the crinkly finish and the bulk. plus it's very easy to use. mylar has a great effect, but it's slippery as hell

If you re winding it on how about Airflo braided backing? It looks a bit like your above photo.

Ok I think what your after is called "body braid" or "diamond braid" or "bills bodi braid" depending on who sells it, bet you would find the same stuff in a dressmakers shop.

This looks pretty cheap-http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saltwater-Predator-fly-tying-material-Pearl-Body-Braid-/321924055277?hash=item4af42b40ed:g:xBgAAOSw6dNWTEJc (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saltwater-Predator-fly-tying-material-Pearl-Body-Braid-/321924055277?hash=item4af42b40ed:g:xBgAAOSw6dNWTEJc)
