Title: Franklin Loomis 10 foot #2 nymphing rod
Post by: Wildfisher on June 22, 2017, 01:27:53 PM
I finally got round to ordering one of these rods. I guess it will be a week before I have it.  £89 delivered, got to be worth the risk!

I'll let you know how it goes with the old Gallic Nymphing.

Wee sea trout would be great sport on that, there's a few places I know where they will take size 12 or 14 Donegal Blues and go to about 2.5lb and that has got to be good fun on a 2 weight.

I have already  had a few sea trout up to 2 1/2 lb  this season on my #4 weight and that certainly was interesting.

I can't find any reports on them!  They might also make a decent loch style rod when fishing for typical  wee  fish from a boat.

I sold quite a lot of gear last year Colin, rods, motors etc.

Mainly stuff from the old, dark days  of loch fishing.  This new rod will open up new possibilities  of river bait fishing.

I've got this rod now, all I need is some decent weather to try it out. It looks OK, well built with quite a nice softish through action which should be just the job  for the French Leader / Czech nymphing set up. It's fairly heavy at 140 G , this is especially noticeable after using light Sage rods for years. Not something I'd like to do a lot of false casting with, but that's not what it's for.  Set up 10 foot  seems very long ............................

I'm ordering one of these on your views tonight Fred. I need something to give me some distance from spooky fish in very low conditions here.

I might do the same. I broke the best rod I have ever used two weeks ago. Like an idiot the line went into the prop of an outboard and the tip shattered. I nearly burst out greetin. Still in mourning and needing to cheer myself up.

Getting it repaired feels like going back to an old girlfriend.....itll just never be the same.

Fred, what's the action like on this rod, a few I've looked at recently (albeit on the cheaper end of the scale) are advertising a stiff/tip action. Its really the opposite id be looking for.

It's quite a soft, through action with a tip bias. It's fine for lobbing heavy nymphs. Only issue I have is it is heavier than I am used to with my 9 foot Sage / Scott rods, not outrageous though and  remember it costs £80  and not £800, so this is just pickiness and hair splitting really.

Ouch I feel for you Paul, I snapped a shakey a couple of months back and I was raging so I think I would loose the plot on anything more expensive.
