I bought this to get the weight I carried into the hills down. By doing so I dropped it by 1.5 Kilos. It hasn't been tested in earnest yet but I have been doing some exercises with it :)

I have it filled with most of my gear plus my 4 Kilo dumbbell, to represent the food :) It weighs in at 15 Kilos and so far I have done about ten to twelve miles on the treadmill carrying it. It sits well on my back and is easily adjustable from waist carrying the weight to shoulders and back again. It is comfortable and fits well to my back, I measured my back before ordering and got the medium length which is the length to fit my back. Next week, when I am checking and packing for my trip, I will pack it properly with everything placed as it will be when I am carrying it, which will give a better idea of how comfortable it will really be :) It is looking like I might have to take some extra clothes this year which will knock my maximum weight up from my estimated 16/17 Kilos to 18 Kilos, I will have to wait and see.

I do realise that carrying it on the treadmill wont be anything like real world carrying and walking but it is more to get me used to carrying the weight for long periods rather than to go straight for it next Saturday :)

Looks quite a good piece of kit Sandy

At 72 litres I suppose it's about the right size for a 35-40 lb pack but the last time I carried a 70ltr pack full, I resolved never again.

Why will you need extra clothes ?

Are you taking the SAT cook kit with you ?

The point is though Donald, I wont be filling it :) I bought it for it's lightness and the extra room that would make it easier to get the bulky items, sleeping bag, tent, food, into it without squashing everything.

This weather doesn't look like it is going to get any better over the next week so warmth will be an issue so an extra t-shirt or fleece might have to go in the pack.

I don't have a SAT.I have a lightweight gas stove and take two 250 gram gas canisters with me for the week. I used to take a 500 gram one but the 250's are easier to slide into nooks and crannies in the pack :)

Ok, I understand partly Sandy and see the logic behind the additional clothing but I also partly don't.

Using the layering system, I'd tend to carry the same stuff for an expedition of this sort pretty much all the time based on a thermal, moisture wicking base layer, a light fleece mid layer and a fleece jacket with a wind and waterproof shell. Adding or removing layers as need be.

Was just wondering about the SAT's as you've mentioned them several times before and they are definately the heavy artillery of the camp cuisine range. Not something to take along if you want to keep weight to a minimum that's for sure !

They do look good in photo's though

I normally wear a T-shirt, long sleeve if it is cool short sleeve if warm, fleece jacket until the heat gets up and then I carry it. In the pack is another T-shirt, either the long or the short sleeve, whichever one I'm not wearing, a spare pair of socks and a lightweight fleece top, hat and gloves. The extra T-shirt I am talking about is so that I have a dry layer for sleeping in if I have to wear both T's as an extra layer when fishing, standing about in a snow shower at 1200 feet can be quite cold :) Walking about is fine but as soon as you stop you start to cool and the two T's makes all the difference but they tend to get damp.

The SAT is my mates. He says it is lighter and cooks quicker than his original Trangia and everything he needs, except food and water, fits inside it. That is why I recommend it to anyone thinking of getting a meths cooker, I prefer gas as I think it is cleaner and quicker.

Why not go for something like this instead of a t-shirt for a base layer

Roll up the sleeves if you need to or there is a short sleeve version too! A bit expensive initially I know but will last for years and won't shrink.

I reckon he must be comparing it weightwise to the  full 25 model as I'm sure the 27 trangia including kettle is lighter. It is a nice piece of kit but I would liken it to the Le Creuset of the camping world though

Cast Iron Saucepans

Great to be able to say you own one but not very practical unless you are in the Swiss army

Not much difference weight wise. Trangia 27 is 938g the SAT is 950g, no kettle or frying pan with that though  The Trangia 25 is 1055g. The idea about the SAT though is size and shape which makes it easier to pack :)

I use these.

I also have a long sleeved one with a small chest pocket, which is handy, but I can't find it on their site so it must be discontinued :)

The pack is packed, and un-packed, and packed and un... you get the idea. Everything is now in and ready for the off on Saturday. I managed to keep it down to 16/17 kilos and it is comfortable to carry. The test will come on the 13 mile walk though :)
