An interesting interview with Chris Townsend on footwear for backpackers.

http://www.fjaderlatt.se/2009/05/interview-chris-townsend-on-footwear.html

I'm considering going for a lightweight pair of boots and have been looking at the Berghaus Explorer Trek GTX Men's Walking Boots.

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/berghaus-mens-explorer-trek-gtx-boots-p141436

I wear walking shoes all the time but I can't get my head around wearing them in the hills the way I do things. I had enough of wet feet when I was a postman and wore trainers all the time in the beginnig 'till I found boots were a whole lot better :)

For me the trade off is nt worth it, Ive traditional leather 3 season boots that fit me like a glove are completely waterproof and robust. My pal has light weight boots and sometimes her feet are wet 30mins into a days walk where as i am still fine at the end of the day. I also like the extra protection when out in rough ground especially if on my own.

The thing about leather boots is the weight and they get heavier as they get wet, even if they are well waxed :) I have worn boots for walking both at work, averaging ten miles a day, and in the hills for extended periods, for thirty years. After a week in the rain, wet ground and standing in the edges of lochs even the best waxed boot gets wet and heavy even if the feet inside are dry, which they wont be as the sweat can't escape and evaporate :)  I would consider lightweight leather boots with a Cambrian lining if I could get a pair nearer two and a half pounds, but they are few and far between and the soles are thinner than paper :)

I bought these last autumn and so far like them, I always have a pair of light weight boots on the go, the last were salomon  GTX and they didnt last very long so decided to try leather ones this time. Was really hoping to just pick up a cheap pair but in the end I couldn't find a bargin and went for quality.

That's one of the types of boot i like and i wear them 300+ days a year , I'm so used to them they don't feel heavy to me. As a self employed window cleaner i do an average of 9000ft ascent a week every week, then spend my days off in the hills.  :)

Having been retired for two years I'm not used to walking as much especially with heavy boots. Lightweight boots were an option I was looking at. Wear and tear aren't a problem as they will be cocooned in Yeti Gaiters :)

For that price I'd rather have another pair of boots  :)
I know you like your yetis, I did try a pair once when they first came out and the first time you cross a burn there great but it didn't take many trips until they developed holes and just leaked like anything else apart from wellies.

I have my original pair which are thirty years old and a new pair that are ten and both are still in perfect condition, except for the sole cross strap which I cut off after they stopped the Attack sole :) My mate George has a pair of the original Wilderness, with the canvas across the toe, which he has had for over thirty years and he still wears them.

Never had that problem and barbed wire tends to do that to most things :) The only thing I see as being a problem is that the rand on the old pair is beginning to show cracks as the rubber deteriorates, as is my mates, but thirty quid can get that repaired if it does go.

You can pick them up cheaper.

Go Outdoors do the Extreme cheap which is made of heavier material.
