I'm fairly sure they are called railway lines :roll:

They look very like what I think of as Goat's Beard but there are lots of these dandy liony things about so I'll defer to the experts :D

SWMBO (who knows about such things) has determined it to be Tragopogon pratensis. Which is the smart-arse way of saying that Andy is correct- Goatsbeard.

Thank your good lady for that I hate having images that don't have the right information attached. It has another name I found 'Jack-Go-To-Bed-At-Noon' because the flowers open only before 1PM :)
