Devils Coach Horse Beetle
« on: September 05, 2016, 12:10:33 PM »
I came across one of these guys just at the entrance to the cabin in my garden the other day.

I thought I had seen most insects but itís the first time I had seen this type and it was definitely not very friendly looking.
When it arched its back like a scorpion and I spotted the pincers I thought better of lifting it up.

It was about 25mm long.

They are impressive beasties!
I used to see them fairly often in woodpiles and under sheds when I was a kid in Somerset but I can't recall the last time I saw one. Never had the nerve to pick one up!
