Kelly’s Lough Co. Wicklow

thumbWe set off one warm afternoon in August from County Kildare and drove for an hour or so before we arrived at Glenmalure in County Wicklow on Ireland’s east coast. We parked the car by the Avonbeg River, got the gear out and made sure we had everything; fishing gear, tents, food and of course, a bottle of wine or two. We trekked up the zigzag path by Carrawaystick Brook, which is a hell of a climb, especially with 50lbs of backpack.

A First Hill Loch

thumbA week’s holiday in Wester Ross in high summer was something I had long looked forward to. On a previous visit for the kids’ autumn half term we had contrived to arrive the week after the season in those parts closed. This trip couldn’t fail to beat that... could it?

Loch Hakel

Loch Hakel is the first loch I fish at the start of the season. It lies about 10 minutes drive from my front door in the small village of Tongue in North Sutherland. Find it on OS Map 10, Strathnaver, Scale: 50,000, at Gd ref: 570530. The loch is surrounded by wildlife-rich peat moorlands and covers an area of about 60 acres.

thumbCasting is at the heart of fly-fishing. We’d all like to become a top gun distance caster. The ability to put out a long line when you need it is a good thing, and a lot of fun, no argument, but the importance of approach and presentation is often ignored or just worked out while fishing.
