Generally I agree, but it would depend on the lad's age.
A trip like that will certainly be memorable, but midgies, rain and clegs can make it miserable for a wee lad.
So a bit more kit to ensure that it is comfortable would be on my list.
I'd also start with a one night trip, if this is the very first time.
'til a voice as bad as conscience,
rang interminable changes,
on an everlasting whisper,
day and night repeated so-
"Something hidden, go and find it,
Go and look beyond the ranges,
Something lost beyond the ranges,
Lost and waiting for you,
Go."

If you have a look at Fishtales profile or footer you'll see he has a website (Sorry cant remember it off the top of my head), on there he has a handy list of what he takes, its a good place to start basically you can adjust the list to your own requirements. It also depends on how far away from the car you are likely to be if not far then take everything, you never know when you wont need it
I used to be a surrealist but now I'm just fish.

There is a load of stuff on the forum that would be useful but searching for it takes time.

This was about food.

A thread on lightweight gear.

I would make it short and simple. Not too far from the road and not too steep a climb. Take his favourite foods to start with, for a few days the weight wont be a problem. Make sure he is going to be warm and dry or he will just be miserable.
Don't worry, be happy.
