I am about to spend some cash on geting some fly tying equipment. I already have a serviceable vice, but was wondering if you guys could give me some info on type and price of scissors, hackle pliers, bobbin holders etc.

Thanks in advance.

These scissors are just fine, and not too expensive.Sportfish do ones of similar quality, at a similar price.

I like this (ceramic) bobbin holder. Don't buy a "Rite" bobbin. They're shite :crap. Don't buy a C & F one. They're expensive. And shite.

Hope this helps :)

(edit - it's the straight, standard bobbin holder in the link.)

It really depends on how much you want to pay and how serious you are about this fly tying mularkey. If you are thinking about long term buy the best you can afford. Get a good pair of fine point scissors (Anvil/Dr Slick etc), a good bobbin holder or two - I prefer ceramic tiemcos- a couple of pairs of hackle pliers and a big needle from a sewing shop stuck in a handle of some sort. You can do 90% (or more) of your tying with these tools.

Try local shops first if no joy Lakeland do a comprehensive range of tools.

Hope this helps

Peter

p.s. If there's a fly dressers guild near you maybe going along & asking to see/try some tools might be a good idea. Where are you sited.

Tesco still have those scissors for 1.90, they are called fine detail scissors, they do the job for me with fine sharp tips, compared with what the specialists charge,       breac uaig

I don't have a problem with cheap scissors myself. I don't think it's really necessary (or better) to spend more than a tenner on a pair of scissors, even from specialist flytying shops. If you can get sharp ones ( that'll stay sharp) with fine points from another source, go for it. Embroidery/craft shops may also be a good source of cheaper scissors. .Can't vouch for these particular Tesco's ones.

.D. Thanks for the links I like the look of the Bobbin holder - would you suggest the white standard or black heavy duty?

Rabbitangler - I am based in Kendal in the Lake District so the links that .D. sent are handy as they are not too far away from me.

I will have a look in my local tackle shop first and see what they have in stock before I decide.

If anyone else has any advice it would be much appreciated.

Only advice I would offer on scissors is buy 2 pairs. One gash pair for cutting course stuff like wire and tinsel and a pair you keep for fine work like cutting feathers etc. No matter how much you pay if you use your good scissors to cut wire etc they will be f*****  in a few days

I have been given a set of scissors (No make or Model on them) I think I will use them for cutting wire etc and get a good set for threads etc.

I popped into the local tackle shop today and was looking at the Bobbin holders that he had in store - very similar to the ones mentioned by .D. very similar price as well. So I will be going to the local tackle shop for my purchases, they also have a good stock of materials.

Again thank you for the advice.
