I got out of the car and surveyed St. Johns loch for the first time. I have to say I wasn’t immediately taken by it. To me at least it seemed flat featureless and dare I say it almost artificial looking.

I remember reading an article by a well known Scottish loch angler that appeared more than a little dismissive of, even mocking, anglers who hike for miles over midge infested bog, or climb half way up a mountain to catch a few fish that might be more accurately weighed in ounces than in pounds.

What is the best way to introduce youngsters to fly fishing? Well, as a youngster in the 1960s none of my relatives fished, so me and my pals had to do it all ourselves. We, like most kids, started off bait fishing and gradually, over the years, progressed to become fly fishers.
