The River Clyde tumbles westward from above Elvanfoot skirting the market towns of Lanark and Hamilton before emptying into the Firth of Clyde at Greenock. The Clyde in past times was more famous for its shipbuilding; here the great Cunard Queens were built, Elizabeth and Mary.
Trotting For Winter Grayling

Unlike some anglers, I don’t look towards the end of the brown trout season with despair. Indeed, I can honestly say that I’m looking forward to the winter ahead; reason being that over the next few months my attention will turn to fishing for the majestic grayling.

Having children seriously damaged my fishing health. Not that I had them, physically, of course – my wife, Ann, bore that burden – but the patter of tiny feet certainly altered our angling attitudes. Dashing river-wards at the drop of a Greenwell’s Glory or the first whisper of a soft south-west wind was not as simple as it was in childless days of yore.

Joanna's Pool always gives me the creeps. Many, many moons ago, a poor crofter lass called Joanna tried to cross the pool carrying a basket of rushes to mend the roof of her summer shieling on the Lewis moor. Instead, she slipped into the river and drowned.
A holiday in trout fishing paradise

During late November 2005 I was fortunate enough to enjoy two weeks fishing some of the fabled rivers of New Zealand’s South Island. I’d visited and fished in the country twelve years ago while backpacking around the country and, although I had some good sport, had been seriously hamstrung by a lack of transport, gear, cash and, probably most of all, fishing experience.
